Commercial Description:
Tripels are often characterized by a complex, spicey, phenolic flavor. Yeast-generated fruity banana esters are also common, but not necessary. These pale ales may finish sweet, though any sweet finish can be light on the palate. The beer is characteristically medium to full bodied with a neutral hop/malt balance. Brewing sugar may used to lighten the perception of body.

Pours a cloudy light orange with a frothy white head that quickly dissipates. Sweet aroma of pils malt, yeast and dough. Flavor is initially somewhat dry and then the creamy sweetness comes through. Medium to full bodied, low carbonation. Very sweet finish.

Growler courtesy of Skyview. Gold color with no head. Aroma is barely detectable with only a bit of yeast showing up. Flavor is mostly wheat, but there is a too strong sour and tangy element that throws it off.

On tap at the brewpub. Brown orange color. Sweet malt nose with a less sweet malt body. Smooth finish, but with that same acidity/sourness as all the other beers here.

Another from Skyview, thanks Bob. This one isn’t so good. The aroma is ok with light fruit and yeast. Sweet flavor but something is off here, it doesn’t taste anything like a tripel should.

Fourth stop during May ’07 brewpub tour, On tap at the Hayward brewpub pours a semi-clear dark golden yellow brew with a thin white head that dissolves quickly to a fine film and nice lacing. Aroma of caramel, banana, medium roasted malt and a touch of yeast. Taste is very sweet, with character of caramel, burnt brown sugar, and hardly any hops. Finish is sweet, yeasty and no bitterness. Though it is the same recipe and brewmaster at the South Shore brewpub, the finish is a little smoother and an apple aftertaste.
