thebeertourist (2751), Oslo, Norway Jan 1, 2006 Red brown with a rich, khaki head cloying to the glass. Yeasty and sweet caramel aroma. Initially sweet, spicy yeastiness takes over, ending dry. Noticeable alcohol.Good carbonation, full-bodied. Very enjoyable, if not the most complex strong ale around. oh6gdx (8801), Vasa, Finland Dec 31, 2005 Bottled. reddish, a bit hazy brown colour, with brown big head. Aroma is raisins, some vegetables, alcohol and toffee. Flavour is spicy, malt, caramel, some plums. Very nice. A bit sticky palate afterwards, xproudfoot (729), Paleolithic, Pennsylvania, USA Dec 30, 2005 Pours ruby brown with a huge tan head. Nice spicy nose. Flavors are immediate and full: strong toffee, a hint of chocolate. Quite smooth & meaty. Sweet. Moderate malt-alcohol presence (rummy). This is definitely a winner, I plan to grab a few and cellar them, because I may want this year-round. Sregnar35 (729), Rotterdam, New York, USA Dec 29, 2005 This is an excellent holiday beer. Flavor is sweet with a clean carbonation and strong alcohol presence. Wish this was more readily available, it’s just too expensive. larsniclas (3383), Gothenburg, Sweden Dec 28, 2005 Bottled.
Amber with a beige head and nice lacing.
Sourish and grassy aroma; soap(?).
Spicy and yeasty flavour with fine sweetness. Cable (286), SE, Oklahoma, USA Dec 26, 2005 Sampled from bottle. Pours murky dark brown with a faint ruby tint. head is tall, creamy and leaves nice lacing. Aroma is very earthy and spicy with some citrus notes. Flavor is quite complex with leather, earth, citrus, hay, peppery spices (probably some of the thyme) and dark fruit. Wow. Full-bodied, moderately carbonated and quite dry. Very enjoyable - too bad it’s a 2003 limited edition, because I would certainly add it to my regular rotation. stouby (1932), Holbaek, Denmark Dec 26, 2005 Bottle, at home.
A dark brown beer with a light brown head, mostly diminishing, fine lacings. Aroma heavy malty (brown sugar, figs, chocolate, orange) moderate hoppy. Flavor heavy sweet ending in moderate bitter, fine balance. Medium body, creamy, flat carbonated, you don’t feel the strength. shrubber85 (2833), Wallhalben, Germany Dec 23, 2005 Bottle. Clove, berry and thyme aromas. Dark brown with large tan head. Spicy hops up front followed by a nice sweet raspberry flavor and ending with alcohol burn. Nice beer - very well balanced with a complex flavor that doesn’t allow the alcohol content to overwhelm the more subtle flavors. A nice beer to sip while smoking a pipe (which is what I’m doing right now).
