dolemike1 (1116), Jeannette, Pennsylvania, USA Mar 2, 2005 Draft: Dark, reddish to purplish brown, nice tan head, wicked aroma... deep ripe dark fruits, plum, concord grape, some spice, flavors are some candy sugar, wood, and potent fruits, the aforementioned grape and plum, finish is pleasant, mildly bitter and drying. EXCELLENT lamas (709), Adams Morgan, Washington DC, USA Feb 18, 2005 750 ml bottle. 2004 edition. Pour is an iced tea brown with HUGE effervescent tan head. Aroma is fruity, spicy, hoppy and yeasty. Taste starts off yeasty and spicy but is quickly overwhelmed by a pretty strong kick of warming alcohol, sugar and wood. Nicely bitter hoppiness at the end too. Tastes a bit like a thin barley wine. 11026 (1799), Alabama, USA Feb 12, 2005 Listed as a barleywine for a tasting event. Bottle. Chestnut colored with a white head. Very carbonated. Slightly fruity in aroma. Moderate alcohol. Decent. Pailhead (2572), Allen Park, Michigan, USA Feb 10, 2005 Bottle: Caramel fruit aroma. Dark transparent amber with an off-white head. Fruity and woody. Alcohol is noticeable in the finish. Woody aftertaste. Light alcohol burn. MiP (8793), Sønderborg, Denmark Feb 6, 2005 Updated: Mar 8, 2007Draught, 10%. Almost clear dark brown colour. Big, creamy, stable light brown head. Yeasty, malty aroma. Peppery, malty and yeasty flavour, slightly sweet. Ruby red, excellent lasting pale beige head and gentle condition. Big fruity spicy aromas with hints of caramel and roast barley. Sweet and spicy in the mouth with corriander and cinnamon apparent and a gentle distant hoppiness. Slightly sweet and syrupy aftertaste with a lingering roasted note.
bb (2905), Martinez, California, USA Jan 30, 2005 Bottle. Dark amber-brown with a big beige head. Spicey aroma with yeast and dark fruits. Very yeasty flavor with sweet malt and subdued citrus and herbs. Rich and complex. Alcohol’s there, but it goes down easily. sayravai (3720), Helsinki, Finland Jan 28, 2005 Updated: Nov 29, 2008(Bottled, 0.75l, re-rate) Very nice, deep red color with a large, foamy and tight, beige head. Malty, fruity, toffeeish, salty and sweet nose with lots of anise. Sweet-malty, yeasty, quite bitter and hoppy, fruity, slightly spicy and alcoholic flavor. Very smooth, foamy-carbonated, medium-bodied, bitter and slightly slicky-alcoholic palate. A quite nice and pleasant, beautiful dessert brew. A bit strangely bitter, but that is gone with the yeasty part added. Probably best, if you mix the yeast in from the beginning. Anise really shows up when warm.
