Nøgne Ø # 100 (Batch 100)

500 mL bottle carted up from Georgia for me courtesy cdumler. Thanks! I’m with dmac... I was saving this for a tasting, but when I read about the labeling snafu, it took on a new sense of urgency. Oh well. Reddish brown pour with a stubborn rocky off-white head. Go away, dammit! Very hoppy aroma, almost acidic, with floral and citrus notes. Rich, malty taste with chocolate notes and a big hop presence. Citrus, resin, pine and such. Full bodied. Alcohol hidden well. Very minor oxidation notes.

Ok first off screw Nogne O, pretend those little slashes are going through the Os, for not properly labeling the bottle. If I knew this was an IIPA I a. would have drank this many many months ago b. drank it in a different glass and c. stored it in the fridge. Either way this beer turned out very enjoyable but by no means is this a barley wine. Pours a super dark brown, especially for an IIPA, with a large foamy/creamy beige head that leaves lace on top of lace and has the lasting power of a pron star shot in the money maker with a combination of viagra and noivcanne. The aroma on this one is very weak but upon lots of warming some pineapple citrus hops come out along with a bit of caramel. Palate on this one is absolute prefection, super creamy full bodied with only the lightest touches of carbonation dancing on the back of my throat, no not like that you sick bastards, no trace of the 10% ABV that this monster hides and a strong bitter finish from the hops. The flavor is much like the aroma and rather weak. The flavor that does show up for the party is slight caramel malts and pineapple citrus hops. I would have drank this beer so long ago if I knew it was an IIPA but I really just blown away by the fantastic creamy head and palate. Anyone who thought the 10% ABV was obvious or to strong must have been high.

An american bottle says Barleywine as noted in the description. I have to say though that this did come across as more of a barleywine to me. Perhaps it had a little age on it, but their was not a particularly strong hop presence. Poured dark brown with big creamy tan head. Aroma is very sweet roasted malts with some notes of spicy floral hops. Flavor is potent, very sweet dry roast bite in the finish. Hops are somewhat evident in the finish leaving biting lingering bitterness but with a general aftertaste indicative of the brews overall malty character.

My 100th rating on RateBeer, and what could possibly be better than a bottle of #100 from Nøgne Ø? 50cl bottle from Barley Wine. Batch 326. It poured a dark brown colour with a big beige foamy head that settles down slowly in the glass. It has a spicy aroma that mells of citrus, cinnamon, and pine trees. The flavour is complex and tastes of roasted malts, coffee, alcohol and spices. It has a long aftertaste.

Pours a luxurious amber from the bottle with a malty off-white head of foam. Caramal and cream dominate both the nose and flavor, but neither manage to masque the alcohol in this one. Notes of red grape and cinnamon. Highly drinkable.
