Commercial Description:
Our 100th batch, brewed for the enjoyment of the brewers, but popular demand forced us to release it commercially. Most enjoyable in a comfortable chair in front of a roaring fire.

Recommended serving temperature 16°C/61°F Ingredients: Maris Otter, wheat, and chocolate malt; Columbus, Chinook, and Centennial hops; English ale yeast, and our local Grimstad water.

23,5°P, 80 IBU, 10% ABV.

Editor's note: Even though the label says "Barley Wine" in the States, the brewery says it's brewed to be an IIPA. The American label was a glitch. In Europe it's sold as an IIPA.

Tasted at the April Northern California Beer Tasting. This Imperial IPA pours a deep amber brown color from a 22oz bottle. Medium sized white foamy head. The aroma is caramel and malt, with a fairly pronounced citrusy hop finish. A medium bodied 2xIPA. The malts are caramel and sweet. The hops are grapefruity and citrusy. Hey, it’s a west coast IPA… what do you mean its from Norway? Well, it’s not quite that hoppy, but you get the idea. Mouthfeel is full. Finish is clean and crisp. Aftertaste is slightly bitter.

Bottle.

Pours a deep dark brown with a caramel glow. The aromas are all about the nuttiness, the barleywine toffees, even some roast -- but in the flavor, chocolate caramel and grapefruit pith, lovely full smooth mouthfeel with just a touch of heat. This is actually really solid, hard to characterize as either barleywine or IIPA not because it’s some kind of wild experiment but rather because it’s just a very nice beer for what it is and then later, when you try to categorize, the categories don’t quite fit.

This one reminds me of a mellowed-out Stone 11th Anniversary. Really nice.

500ml bottle from South Bay Drugs. Barley Wine? Double IPA? Has numerous characteristics from both styles. Pours a very dark brown, darker than most Barley Wines. A thin beige head with a tad bit of lacing. Good size amount of hops on the nose with some toasted malt and dark fruit. Finish was malty and quite bitter.

50 cl bottle shared with Ljunkan @ Bishop’s Arms - Karlstad. Impressive beer! Extreme bitterness, nutty and caramellish flavours. Excellent beer as always from Nøgne Ø. Cheers to our Norweigan friends!

50cl bottle. Pours a really dark brown for an IIPA with a huge foamy, tan head. Aroma is mostly piney hops plus some chocolate. Pleasant flavour with citrus hops, chocolate and coffee. No real hint of the 10 ABV. Really nice twist on the typical IIPA.
