mmhnto (24), Lisle, Illinois, USA May 10, 2008 Pours deep red to brown with slight tan head. While pouring carbonation seemed very low. Aroma is very complex with notes of caramel, roast malt and cherry sourness not unlike Rodenbach or the Duchess. Unfortunately, the body seemed to be very lacking. I expected this 8.5% beer to have more body and balance. On the plus side it goes pretty well with chocolate chip cookies. esjaygee (361), Oak Creek, Wisconsin, USA May 9, 2008 Dark brown with frothy tan head. Aroma of caramel, brown sugar, toasted malts, spice and smoke. Taste of smoked malts, chocolate and caramel. Rich taste with the alcohol slightly noticeable. Pretty solid brew. austone (171), Pori, Finland May 4, 2008 Dark brown to black with tanned lacing head. Burned malty aroma with salty liquorice and citric spices. Flavor is burned malts, liquorice, slight chocolate, coffee and quite strong spices. Smoothly bitter coffeeish finish. Medium to full bodied, smooth palate. Viciously burned and spicy but still extremely drinkable. Vas19 (144), Maryland, USA Apr 30, 2008 Pours an opaque dark brown with a tan head. Strong aroma of caramel and hops. Flavor starts sweet malty with caramel and hops and finishes with a nice roastedness. Good viscous body. Nice warming in the belly. Solid beer. DocHop (142), College Park, Maryland, USA Apr 30, 2008 Pours a very dark brown with a pretty thick tan head that sticks around the edges. Aroma of intense caramel with some slightly roasted qualities and a little bit of earthy hop scents. Taste is similar to the aroma, except here the caramel is downplayed while the roasted malt is really pounded in. Still very sweet at first with a thick, creamy body and a lasting dry roasted finish.
