Commercial Description:
Don Barkley Master Brewer of Napa Smith Brewery and the original brewer for the New Albion Brewing Co., has brewed for SF Beer Week the original New Albion Pale Ale. “Using recipes from New Albion we have reproduced a great ‘straight forward’ pale ale that helped shape America’s brewing history”. Although this ale dims in the stark glare of today’s extreme beers, it holds high the unique character of true craft brewing. New Albion Brewery yeast was used for fermentation thanks to the generosity of the Mendocino Brewing Company, who still uses this yeast in their ales. Pale malt used at New Albion was sourced from San Francisco’s last producing Malt House (Bauer & Schweitzer) in this beer we used a blend of 50 % Great Western 2-row and 50% Gambrinus Pale Ale Malt. The Napa water was hardened with the addition of Gypsum to a level of 350PPM hardness. Hops used as in the New Albion recipe are Cluster for bittering and Cascade for aroma (This was the Cascades first introduction into the craft brewing industry).

Tap at various locations during SF beer week, just now looking through notes. Was not much to write home about, decidely average as all Napa Smith beers. Body too thin, hops too harsh, not much happening there.

Tasted on tap at the Bistro Double IPA Festival on 2/7/2009. This American Pale Ale pours a light gold color from the tap. Medium sized white foamy head. The aroma is fruity and sweet with a touch of floral hops. A medium bodied American Pale Ale. The malts are fruity and sweet. The hops are crisp and floral. Nice balance. Good carbonation. Light crisp and clean tasting APA. A touch sweet at the finish. It is interesting to taste this beer, somewhat for nostalgia sake, but also to just remind ourselves how much the APA style has evolved over the years. I remember when this was a very flavorful , very hoppy beer, now it would be more in the “English Style” of Pale Ales. Still a nice beer, but the world has changed much since it was last brewed. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and crisp. Aftertaste is slightly bitter.

Draft. Pale amber beer with an off-white head. Bready and light citrus aroma. Citrus and light pine flavor with light malt backing. Medium bodied. Some bitterness. Grapefruit lingers with a bit of breadiness. I didn’t expect it to have even as much hops as it did.

Smells similar to a Belgian, but tastes more like a lager. Not sweet at all and very bitter.

(02/20) On draft at Toronado-SF. Pours extremely clear and clean. Darkish yellow color. Slight head. Light in hops. Wasn’t the most flavorable, but perhaps it was partially impacted by the barleywines I’d just consumed, though I did rinse my mouth out with water before partaking. Back in the 1980s/90s this was probably a very great beer, but it’s really average at this point.

Draught at City Beer, SF Golden with a brief, white head. Light yeasty and sourish aroma. Light body with grassy, dry, citric bitterness. Not very 2xIpa to me.

Category needs to change. This is not a Double IPA even if it was at the Double IPA fest. This was the Original Recipe for Albion Brewing Company for a pale ale. Note in history, there were no American Pale Ales or IPAs at this time, only American and British Historical references. I’m judging this beer for what it was and tried to be. Extra Pale. nose of toast, biscuit, yeast esters, notably pear and apple. Deep gold in color. Off white, fast dissapating head. Flavor of toast, pear, light orange and lemon. Very delicate, rather dry finish. Almost like a light wheat ale with more hops.

I respect the history here, but this is really an average beer in every respect. Double IPA my ass. This is miscategorized on this site. Golden-yellow color with a small white head. Aroma is pale malt mostly. My girlfriend remarked, "It’s like Budweiser," which was a really harsh and insulting comment, but the beer is not terribly exciting overall. Flavor is pale malt and some Noble hops. Dry and crisp but fairly light on the palate.
