CaptainCougar (5379), Rockville, Maryland, USA Jun 14, 2009 Tap at the brewpub on 2/2/08: Pours a mostly opaque black with dark mahogany edges and a well-lacing tan head. Aroma of smoky earthy dark malts and chocolate caramel with a touch of ash. Body starts pretty thick and dark malty sweet with some sticky chocolate and earthy roasty smoky complexity toward the finish. A nicely balanced and enjoyable smoked porter. decaturstevo (1971), decatur, Tennessee, USA Feb 15, 2009 Almost black pour with brown head and lace. Light hint of coffee on the nose. Hard coffee flavor and a very nice finishing medium bitter. Nice silky smooth palate. One of the best BP porters ever for me. Rogueone (506), I F&ckin’ hate those guys from, Ohio, USA Jan 19, 2009 Draft @ NG’s: If you don’t like sweetness in your stouts/porters, this is a great one to try. Pours a dark black, and packed full of ashy smoke and bitter chocolate malt from the beginning to end. I liked it. LawBadger (24), Raleigh, North Carolina, USA Nov 29, 2008 From tap @ Natty’s: Pours nearly black with tan head. Aroma of malt and slight sweetness. A rich smokey taste with malt and slight chocolate sweetness. A nice bitter finish with a medium body. One of my favorites at Natty’s. ChainGangGuy (2522), Kennesaw, Georgia, USA Feb 4, 2008 Appearance: Black body with a small, beige head.
Smell: Burnt, black malts with notes of charred chocolate blocks and smoke.
Taste: Roasty black malt flavor accentuated by a rich, though reasonable smoke component. Hint of baker’s chocolate. Not too much in the way of sweetness, but you do get your money’s worth in roasty bitterness. Bitter, smokey, even ashen finish.
Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation.
Drinkability: An enjoyable smoked beer where the smoke character isn’t grotesquely overdone. ogglethorp (882), Ohio, USA Feb 4, 2008 Tap. Pours almost black with a thin tan colored head. Aroma is peat, chocolate, roast. Flavor is huge smokey peat, chocolate, burnt malts. Palate is medium bodied, medium carbonation, finished very bitter and smokey. Smoke was almost too much. goldtwins (4078), Nesconset, New York, USA Nov 2, 2007 tap @ Natty Greenes: Poured a very dark almost opaque brown with an amber edge and light tan head. The aroma had a decent balance of smoke and roasted malt. Light fruitiness. the flavor was roasty and smokey. Some mild sweetness.
