Commercial Description:
Boasting a ruby hue and an exquisite floral aroma, Red Nectar is a robust yet elegant brew with distinctive accents of toasted malt, caramel, spice and residual sweetness. The beer that started it all… Red Nectar was considered a strange bird when it was first released in 1987. After all, where did a robust, handcrafted all-natural amber ale fit into the massive flock of American industrial lagers? Answer: it didn’t. So it blazed its own trail, helping set the pace for the craft brew revolution. Enjoy Red Nectar for its dazzling reddish copper hue, original flavors and caramel spice accents. (Editor’s Note: originally brewed by Humboldt Brewing Company as "Humboldt Red Nectar Ale" until their acquisition by Firestone Walker.)

12 ounce bottle. Aroma has immediate pine hoppiness, which dissipates very quickly. Intensely floral aromas are left in the wake of this. Lots of rose scents and citronella present (there are no citronella candles in my entire residence). Initially promising aroma, which goes a bit downhill, but still ok. Attractive transparent copper body with some amber tints present. Nice, moderately frothy yellow-cream head. Start is initally carbonated with some light spicy hop flavors. Becomes a little sweeter with a touch of caramel in the middle. Floral hops to finish with more of that citronella present. A light metallic flavor also lingers at the end. Solid.

Bottle at Hoppie’s in Cayucos, CA. Hazy reddish amber pour with some basic malt aromas. Good finishing flavor, although there’s no real middle to it.

Beautiful color and richness with slight lacing. Perfect hop smell and taste without obscene bitterness taking away from it. Finishes nicely with a slight bite. Flavor lasts and leaves the mouth wanting more - it doesn’t dry the mouth as some beers seem to.

Bottle. Pours deep ruby brown with quickly disappearing off-white head with lacing down the side of the glass. Aroma is pungent and prickly citrus fruits - passionfruit, pineapple even some mango- and a trace of honey-like malt scent. Flavor is very light with an understated round toffee malt taste and floral and berry hoppiness in the finish. Aftertaste is lots of lingering herbal/piney hoppiness. Nice. Similar to some cask ESBs I’ve had.

A deep maroon reddish pour with lasting off white head. Smell is a nice fragrant sweet hoppiness. Taste is a good crisp hop flavor kick at first with light bitterness, and a smooth, clean, quick finish without much lingering flavor. Overall a really good amber that I’d buy again if I could get it here in Austin.
