Commercial Description:
Boasting a ruby hue and an exquisite floral aroma, Red Nectar is a robust yet elegant brew with distinctive accents of toasted malt, caramel, spice and residual sweetness. The beer that started it all… Red Nectar was considered a strange bird when it was first released in 1987. After all, where did a robust, handcrafted all-natural amber ale fit into the massive flock of American industrial lagers? Answer: it didn’t. So it blazed its own trail, helping set the pace for the craft brew revolution. Enjoy Red Nectar for its dazzling reddish copper hue, original flavors and caramel spice accents. (Editor’s Note: originally brewed by Humboldt Brewing Company as "Humboldt Red Nectar Ale" until their acquisition by Firestone Walker.)

12 oz bottle poured a nice copper color and had a thin white head with decent lacing. Floral aroma with some notes of caramel, pine and citrus. Smooth flavor with a caramel, malt and a hint of honey. Good dry finish with some hop bitterness.

Not much through on aroma. First impression was something green can not identify, but not unpleasant, I got used to it. Very lean. I had this after an Anderson Valley IPA at Yard House ranch Mirage. I will re rate when its on a better playing field

bottle. Pours a dark copper with a white head that doesn’t go anywhere for most of the drinking session. The aroma is pretty raw: a little chalky, some floral, bitter notes. The caramel/honey sweetness is quite palatable and meshes well with the somewhat awkard bitter notes. There are plenty of more floral acidic flavors, but some plasticity comes through as well. Overall, this is not too bad for the style.

Pours out of the bottle a beautiful reddish brown color, copper like a newly minted penny. The head foamed up just a little bit and off-white in color before disappearing fairly quickly. The aroma is definitely on the fruity/floral side, giving evidence that the flavor will be dominated by the malts. My first sip of the beer was tentative. I was surprised at how much I liked the initial taste. Instead of heavy fruit-like flavors to it, it had more the taste of caramel or toffee. There were definitely undertones of fruit in the brew, but they weren’t as strong as I’d expect them to be. I also detected some spices in the mix. The finish has a bitter kick to it from the hops. It wasn’t overly carbonated to accent the hops, so it went down nice, dry, and smooth.

Pours copper with a small white head. Floral and citrusy hop aroma with a good deal of sweet, caramel-ish and toffee-ish. Very well-balanced, but the hops don’t have the unique mellow character of the IPA Nectar; in this one they’re a bit harsher. As it warms, a lot of the malt flavor comes through.

Clear dull red with a creamy head. Has a few floaters that look like little hairs. Maybe fibers from a sheet filter? Lightly sweet fruity caramel hop aroma. Sweet and tangy with some resinous hops, toasted malt and earthy notes. Perfect finishing bitterness. Extremely well balanced. A very nice, easy drinking ale.

Very nice red-brown body, minimal white head. Hops with heavy spices (maybe a honey base) and a good amount of bitterness in the aroma. Floral tastes with sweet fruit accents. Slightly tart ending, not the best Red Ale I’ve had.

Bottle. Semi-translucent red amber with a few bubbles and no real head. Aroma a bit of hoppy ipa with a more flowery tinge than some. Robust, hoppy, tawny flavor with a sweet strong malt backbone. It’s allright, fits well into a class of beers that will more than do but that you will never seek out.
