Commercial Description:
Boasting a ruby hue and an exquisite floral aroma, Red Nectar is a robust yet elegant brew with distinctive accents of toasted malt, caramel, spice and residual sweetness. The beer that started it all… Red Nectar was considered a strange bird when it was first released in 1987. After all, where did a robust, handcrafted all-natural amber ale fit into the massive flock of American industrial lagers? Answer: it didn’t. So it blazed its own trail, helping set the pace for the craft brew revolution. Enjoy Red Nectar for its dazzling reddish copper hue, original flavors and caramel spice accents. (Editor’s Note: originally brewed by Humboldt Brewing Company as "Humboldt Red Nectar Ale" until their acquisition by Firestone Walker.)

Bottle. Clear, brownish-red with a lasting spit of head. Nose is leafy caramel and earthy spiced fruit. Flavor is bold tea leaf, then some caramel and wood, followed by a lightly roasty finish. Smooth, light-medium body finishes roasty dry.

Bottle at lithy’s Septemberfest. Pours orange mahogany with beige head. The aroma is toasted caramel, pine, tangerine, and some earthiness. The flavor is slight pine and toast and a sort of cola note. Finish is mild and woody. Bland, but decent.

12 oz. bottle. Pours a hazy amber with a slight tinting of red. Moderate linen white head that lasted through the first quarter of the glass and left a bit of lace. There is a pleasant sweet floral aroma almost like honeysuckle along with a bit of malt. The flavor falls off a bit from the aroma and is malt along with a bit of citrus hops. Mild-moderate bitterness at the finish.

Brown, which a little disapointing because it says "red" right there on the label and so I was expecting it to be, y’know, red. But it wasn’t, it was brown. This mostly a sweetish, malty beer, with a lot a caramel and toffee, with just a touch of hops in the finish. Sampled at lithy’s Septemberfest.

Sampled at Lithy’s Septemberfest Tasting. Clear brown with amber highlights. Sweet and malty caramel nose with some hop citrus floral in the flavor. Hoppy amber, not bad.

Pint on tap at a local bar. Dark red color as advertised, large head, looks very appetizing. Leaves a nice lacing on the side of the glass as you drink it. Aroma was hoppy with a little spicyness and sweet maltiness. Flavor very well balanced and just a little bitter. Palate was smooth, overall very good beer.

Serving: 12 oz. bottle. Appearance: Deep amber color with a frothy, light tan head. Aroma: Spicy hops with pine undertones. Caramel malt and a touch of breadiness. Good so far! Taste: Mirrors the nose. Light caramel notes with a decent pine hop bitterness. Some bread on the back end. The hops play center stage here, not the malt. A big difference from other versions of the style I have tried. Mouthfeel: Medium carbonation with a medium body. Medium, bitter finish. Overall: A straightforward brew that is as tasty as it is uncomplicated. Rebuy: This is a good everyday drinker if you can find it reasonably priced.
