Commercial Description:
Boasting a ruby hue and an exquisite floral aroma, Red Nectar is a robust yet elegant brew with distinctive accents of toasted malt, caramel, spice and residual sweetness. The beer that started it all… Red Nectar was considered a strange bird when it was first released in 1987. After all, where did a robust, handcrafted all-natural amber ale fit into the massive flock of American industrial lagers? Answer: it didn’t. So it blazed its own trail, helping set the pace for the craft brew revolution. Enjoy Red Nectar for its dazzling reddish copper hue, original flavors and caramel spice accents. (Editor’s Note: originally brewed by Humboldt Brewing Company as "Humboldt Red Nectar Ale" until their acquisition by Firestone Walker.)

Bottled. Pours crystal clear, copper color, giant beige head that’s creamy on top, less so on the sides, decent lacing start to finish. Heavy malts on the nose with honey, but dominated by hops with bitter citrus and some almost piney notes and definite sweet flowers on the end. Smells more like an IPA than an amber. Nice, lively carbonation, medium body with a somewhat watery finish, like syrup in water. Sugary sweet, but not enough to balance out the hops that are dominant from start to finish; pine and citrus hops, very bitter flavor, but not an overwhelming amount of it and the sugar, lasting through the finish, helps. The flavor is somewhat abrasive with the harsh bitter and the watery finish that doesn’t "buffer" your palate from that, but it’s still rather drinkable and VERY refreshing. Nice amber.

Copper body with frothy beige head. Pleasant citrusy hops aroma. Medium bodied, creamy, nice carbonation. Flavor was a refreshing citrus/hops. A good but not great ale with a clean, crisp, satisfying taste.

As a local brew, this is easy to find here, and a lot of locals purchase it in bottles. I drank one yesterday, and as a newer rater paid a lot of attention to what I was drinking. Poured into a glass it had an interesting amber color that somehow reminded me of honey. Nice white head, and I was greeted by an aroma that I can only describe as a mixture of hops, carmel, and maybe coffee. It had a little bit of a bite at the start that I found a little disconcerting, that went away but returned again right at the end. Yet it was drinkable and overall a decent, but not outstanding ale. There are other ales made and available here in Humboldt County I like better. But if someone hands me one, I will not complain.

I agree completely with the commercial description , with t e addition of a long lasting hoppy aftertaste, as is quite common among modern US brews. I think I beat omhper to this one (on tap) ;-)

Smells kinda sweet. Nice amber color. Smooth taste with honey and clove flavor with slight hops. Pretty good brew, worth a try.

Nice smooth amber. Lightly kissed with a floral aroma/flavor and malt. Mine had a big head which I don't know if that was typical.
