Commercial Description:
Boasting a ruby hue and an exquisite floral aroma, Red Nectar is a robust yet elegant brew with distinctive accents of toasted malt, caramel, spice and residual sweetness. The beer that started it all… Red Nectar was considered a strange bird when it was first released in 1987. After all, where did a robust, handcrafted all-natural amber ale fit into the massive flock of American industrial lagers? Answer: it didn’t. So it blazed its own trail, helping set the pace for the craft brew revolution. Enjoy Red Nectar for its dazzling reddish copper hue, original flavors and caramel spice accents. (Editor’s Note: originally brewed by Humboldt Brewing Company as "Humboldt Red Nectar Ale" until their acquisition by Firestone Walker.)

This is a wonderful beer. It has a light citrusy hop profile that is perfectly balanced with the subtle malt characteristics. Pours a lovely copper red nice head light body . It’s a lovely example of the understated in a world of big IPA’s it’s a nice change of pace.

Growler. Pours copper with a thick white head. Aroma of fresh apple skins and floral hops. Flavor of floral and caramel malts with a lot of bitter hops in the finish. Palate is a little watery. On the bitter side for me. Just ok. 7/4/7/3/14 (3.5/5)

Growler. Aroma of perfumy/floral hops, actually very nectar-like, and sweet, grainy malt. Flavor sweet and juicy, hints of resinous hops. Some tart fruity notes, vaguely jam-like. Pretty tasty.

Beautiful clear copper body with a tall tan head. Lightly sweet bready, somewhat biscuit, malt backbone characterized by caramel and honey. Great hop profile with pine, light grapefruit citrus, and subtle resin components. Lingering grainy malt finish. A very well constructed beer.

Bottle. Pours a clear reddish amber with a rocky off white head. Aroma is bready malts and citrus hops. Flavor is malty, toasty caramel with a nice citrus complement. Really well balanced and easy to drink. Better than most of this style. Medium bodied with decent carbonation.

Poured reddish brown with a nice head, good retention and decent lacing. Grassy hops aromas dominate with some roasted malts. Strong hops bitterness up front on the tongue followed immediately by a solid malt background that lingered through the aftertaste. Caramel, honey and grapefruit flavors are also evident. Medium body and carbonation, and a pleasant aftertaste that featured the roasted malts and grapefruit. Given what I paid for this, it is one of the better beer values out there.

Found it at Von’s Pavillions in Monrovia, CA. Very crisp, refreshing, and perfectly hopped. A very underrated beer that could be mixed in with your regular session. Don’t be fooled by the word Red, it is more a west coast pale ale than an "amber ale" in everything but the color.
