Wulfstan (481), California, USA Oct 11, 2007 This is a wonderful porter. From the bottle, it is a very deep, dark red-brown that is not quite black, and it has a thick, rich tan head that is longlasting, with fairly good lacing. The aroma is malty, earthy, sweet with a toffee element and faintly fruity. It tastes, malty, very toasty a little earthy, somewhat bitter, with a faint crisp tartness and definite, but mild and smooth chocolate finish. All round, it is a wonderfully rich, strongly flavourful beer, yet smooth, complex, and exceedingly well balanced, with no elements overpowering any others and all blending perfectly well, making it incredibly drinkable. The only down side is that the mouth feel is a tad too thin and fizzy for a porter. Otherwise, it’s outstanding.
astrofrk (95), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA Nov 2, 2008 Brown-Black. Nice, long head. Aroma: Chocolate roasted malt, fruit. Flavor: The same with a hint of vanilla. Nice.
One of the better porters I have had. PJClarke (50), London, Surrey, England Oct 28, 2008 Bottle: A deep ruddy brown coulour with a tight little, beige head. smokey aroma with dark caramel malts. Smokey flavours appear again in the mouth along with those of nuts and chocolate. Taut fizz in the mouth too. Quite a hoppy finish surprisingly. Un-astonishing. KnN (351), Greenbelt, Maryland, USA Oct 2, 2008 Pours a ruby/brown color with a short-lived off white head. Some nice lacing in the Glass. K said that her initial reaction to the aroma was the girl scout cookie Samoas. Coconut and chocolate and a little toastiness. I can see that in there. Flavor is more of the chocolate coffee and some fruitiness that I may or may not call coconut. Something there though. This is a really mild beer though. Very aqueous. Wish it had a bit more in the mouthfeel department, but pretty nice otherwise. danielcurtis81 (262), San Diego, California, USA Sep 22, 2008 Getting notebook online. Bottle. Redish color, looks thin and watery almost a wine color. A strong fruity smell with a hint of chocolate, begins to become unappetizing. very sweet smooth taste, malt and fruit taste, some milk chocolate flavor. Very smooth tasting beer sweeter taste, would make it a good desert beer. gwpom (210), Akron, New York, USA Sep 16, 2008 Unlike most US porters, this had the flavor I’ve very much come to expect from English porters. Not completely opaque, still dark and nice light brown head that left a lot of lacing, I very much enjoyed this beer. As I said, UK porters have something that gives them a bit of a tang, and this one left no doubt to me it was a UK brew. Very nice, and I recommend it.
