| 2.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 1/10 | 4/5 | 4/10 | 4/5 | 12/20 | May 12, 2005 bottle. Pours a dark, thick looking black. Whew! is this beer sweet or what!? It was like drinking beer that had been mixed with maple syrup, it was hard to detect any other flavors because of the nearly abusive sweetness of the brew. I can see why moonks brewed this for fasting, all that residual sugar! makes sense that the abv is so low, that yeast never got to eat enough in my opinion. Well the jury is still out on this one for me, maybe just too sweet for my palate, but it seems like a ok beer. zach8270 (2140), Henrietta, New York, USA

Aroma of cold coffee with a touch of sweetness to it. The flavor is simply bad. Very sweet and rotten with hints of bitterness and over-ripened fruits. Had to nearly choke this one down. | 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | May 2, 2005 Pours obsidian (very little light through this one) with smallish tan head. Aroma of big corn flakes, chocoff, blackstrap molasses. Tastes sweet, with a rauchy element coupled with blackberries, cola, chocoff, molasses, and milk stoutiness. This one is really sweet, but it doesn’t take away the overall presence. Medium in mouthfeel, this beer has the most pronounced chocolate syrup taste I have yet encountered. i don’t think the sweetness is a negative thing, rather it makes this one stand out. I’m having this one with semi-sweet chocolate, and it goes together great. I’d drink this any day of the week and twice on Sunday. Just delicious. This may be the most under-rated beer on this site. Start showing the love, people! GrainBeltGuzzler (249), Goodhue, Minnesota, USA

Tastes alot like a mocha frapachino from starbucks very sweet no real trace of acohol. only real complaint is that it is thinner than I would prefer. not a great beer but I must admit it was quite enjoyable RateandPillage (417), Atlanta, Georgia, USA
| 2.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 10/20 | Apr 21, 2005 Dug up my notes from trying this one about 5 years ago. I bought in a tourist shop near Berlin. Quite dark color with light brown head. Sweet malty aroma with a bit of hops poking through. Strange flavor. Not like other Schwarzbiers I have had. Low in body and alcohol, but unusually sweet. Actually, I’ve recently had the Brazilian Xingu that must be modeled after this, as it is quite similar. hawkshadow (102), Rural Retreat, Virginia, USA

Aroma of burnt raisins or baking sweet bread.
Pours black with thin head.
Starts sicky sweet, lightly malty, heavily sweet and fruity with heavy molasses taste.
Finish is sweet, syrupy and creamy. ChristianScheffel (4689), Odense, Denmark

| 2.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 3/10 | 1/5 | 7/20 | Mar 31, 2005 "Saved by the aroma!" is the best way to describe this beer. Pours a nice head with thick bubbles. Pleasantly soft, bready and malty aroma like blueberry pie. Some hops also show through in the aroma, but the flavor of this beer is drowned by what appears to be an extremely high level of malt sugar. Mouthfeel is very cloying. Sorry, couldn’t finish this. Don’t think I’ve ever come across such a disparity between ratings criteria before and after hitting the mouth.
