Seems OK when it hits the tongue, but, once my teeth started aching from all the excessive sugars, it’s just not so pleasant. Far, far too sweet, overpowers anything vaguely roasty in this one. Drain, meet pour. MaxPower (961), St. Louis, Missouri, USA
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Jul 31, 2004 Dark brownish almost black in color, nice wispy brown head that leaves a good lacing in my glass, faint roasted coffee malt aroma, decent roasted malty flavors, light bodied with a somewhat watery mouthfeel, it has a nice roasty bitter finish, average for the style, decent. | 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | Jul 15, 2004 This brew poured thick and dark with very little light getting through and had a chocolatey aroma. Mouthfeel was creamy, milky with roasted malt, chocolate, coffee and vanilla flavors. Lingering toasty bittersweet finish. Quite rich and sweet, and would make a fine dessert beer. I think this is the German brewer who is in trouble with the Reinheitsgebot authorities for adding sugar to the brew. Sigmund (2286), Hafrsfjord, Norway
| 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 4/10 | 2/5 | 10/20 | Jul 14, 2004 Updated: Jul 15, 2004(500 ml bottle, bought in Norway). Pours with a good lasting head, colour is black (= very dark brown to ruby). Very nice aroma of hayloft, some barnyard, molasses, dark syrup, coffee and German bakery. Flavour and aftertaste have interesting rich malty notes with some roastiness, but are unfortunately ruined by the invertsugar syrup which has been added to the brew. Must be another beer for "convalescents and nursing mothers". Ernest (4491), Boulder, Colorado, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Jul 7, 2004 Head is initially average sized, frothy, light brown, mostly lasting.
Body is black (not opaque). Aroma is moderately malty (roasted
grain/nuts, dark chocolate, coffee), lightly hoppy (flowers), with notes
of maple syrup and brown sugar. Flavor is heavily sweet, lightly bitter.
Finish is moderately sweet, moderately bitter. Medium body, velvety
texture, lively carbonation. Very nice aroma, but much too sweet (and in
a sugary way, surprisingly) for the style. Inexplicable, based on the
strength of the other three Neuzellers I’ve had. Kinz (2207), Glen Allen, Virginia, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jul 1, 2004 Many here have hated this beer, I found it to be unique, in a good way. Black, light does pass through with ruby highlights, firm tan head that lasted nicely. Chocalate aroma. Flavor was sweet with a definite cocoa note. The closest thing I’ve ever had to a Yoohoo! while drinking a beer. Short, abrupt finish. I usually don’t go for beers this sweet, but I enjoyed this one. Almost a baltic porter more than a Schwarz. | 2.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 4/10 | 2/5 | 12/20 | Jun 26, 2004 Updated: Jun 28, 2004This pours a near opaque black with touches of red around the edges. Creamy Mocha head that gives off an aroma of toasted marshmallows with a hint of fruit.
The flavor is intensely sweet with a roast malt background. Not a good Schwarzbier, weird sweetness, but some will like this. Trappist (279), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA
| 1.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 2/10 | 1/5 | 3/20 | Jun 14, 2004 I had to pour this one out in the yard after the first half. Way to sweet almost like a childs cough syrup!
I am not quite sure what they were going for on this one but it missed the mark by a long shot. I never knew something could suck and blow at the same time!
