Commercial Description:
I want to bring everyone up to speed on a new project called Brewer’s Best Friend Series – basically, three beers made in honor of Jesse Williams's and my canine companions (yes, this idea came from John Maier of Rogue and his dog, the late Brewer). First up (brewed 2-16-07) is: Jasmine the Mastiff Sweet Stout. Malt: 2-row, roasted barley, chocolate Hops: East Kent Goldings and Fuggles (for bittering only) Spices: Lactose sugar, spiced Mexican chocolate, honey O.G.: 1073 ABV: Circa 7% IBUs: 36 The mastiff is the gentle giant of English-bred dogs -- loyal, noble, big and lazy for the most part.

Pours pitch black with a fully receding tan head. Aroma of chocolate, vinous malts, and dark malts. Tastes of chocolate, pepper, dark malts without bitter astringency and some sweetness. Mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with soft carbonation from the cask. Pretty nice stout from NABC, one of their better beer.

On tap at NABC. A black pour with almost no lace. An aroma of roasted malt with a chocolate and coffee kicker. A flavor of dark chocolate and a bitter that is close to the same choco. A very nice warmth all the way through is something I like in a beer. Good carbonation but a tad thin. A good beer that is what it says it is.

Draught. Pours stark black with thin tan head. The aroma is espresso, some sweet caramel, and planty hops. The flavor is nice and roasty, dry, with a little bit of alcohol hotness at first. Some toasty and planty hops kick in shortly. The finish is dry and lingering.

draught. Pours extra black with little to no head. The aroma is dense of burned brownies and coffee. Mouthfeel is nice and chewy on this one with a wall of bittersweet chocolate accompanied by light roasted coffee, Brazil nuts. The finish is overly hot on the first two sips, almost like vodka. This goes away about a 1/4 into the glass. Not sure what that was all about. It’s a pretty good stout, I really like the density. There is an underlying buttery character that was my only qualm near the end of the glass.

Draft - a deep chocolate aroma with plenty of roast. This one looks much like Guinness, but with a much darker head. The bubbles are larger, as well, since it is not a nitro pour. The head did subside rather quickly. A quite full-bodied stout with a creamy mouthfeel. A nice, chocolate flavor with a bit of sourness that is common to the style. This is a very nice stout!
