Smells of roasted malts and chocolate, and the flavor is chocolaty with a hint of coffee and carmel. Very light body. This beer could be mistaken for a stout if it were a little thicker. elgavilancillo (63), South Gate, California, USA

Minor roast character in the aroma and taste. Very minor belgian yeast influence in the taste as well. Very refreshing considering it is dark and "belgian." I think they used caraffa and a very low phenol yeast to get around these though, so I wouldn’t necessarily label it as either. TheGrandMaster (1877), Auckland, New Zealand
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Jun 22, 2009 Bottle (in NZ). Pours a cola-brown with a light tan head. Plenty of roasted malt and bitter chocolate on the nose. Chocolate and roasted malt again in the mouth, a touch of graininess. Quite a light mouthfeel, with a short finish. Tasty enough, without much complexity. UriahHeep (105), Georgia, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jun 20, 2009 Dark brown pour, thick foamy head. Aromatic yeast. A very light tasting beer, with subtle chocolatey malts. Not a lot of hops to be found in this brew. Notes of caramel, cocoa and brown sugar. Overall this beer is a little too light for my liking, but it has an interesting story and I like the idea of a throwback, centuries-old beer from Belgium having a pretty high visibility in today’s market. adavis234 (137), Columbia, South Carolina, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jun 19, 2009 22 oz bottle. Pours a deep, dark brown with a thick, creamy tan head. Roasted dark chocolate malt aroma with a a some alcohol in the nose. Strong roasted malt flavor that is not too heavy. A surprisingly light, crisp feel to the brew. A bit of chocolate at the end and not much alcohol in the flavor, despite its prevalence in the aroma. A good dark beer for the summer because it packs a good flavor punch without being overly heavy. wxman (592), O’Fallon, Illinois, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jun 18, 2009 Pours a dark brown color with a decent light tan head. This has a sweet aroma of roasted malt and some spice. The taste is assertive, yet quaffable. Roasted malt sweetness with notes of caramel, molasses and some slight well- balanced sourness, but still thin enough in texture to be refreshing and enjoyably drinkable even on a warm day. Similar to a dark lager, yet retaining the sweet fruity characteristics of an ale. I like! Crafty07 (393), Florence, Kentucky, USA

I liked the elaborate story in the commerical description. Seems as good enough reason to travel to Belgium as any!
Dark ale with balanced taste of nuts, a bit of raisons, and coffee and cocoa like malts. Perfect ale to sip late at night by the fire.
