Commercial Description:
Born of a flood and centuries-old Belgian text, 1554 Enlightened Black Ale uses a light lager yeast strain and dark chocolaty malts to redefine what dark beer can be. In 1997, a Fort Collins flood destroyed the original recipe our researcher, Phil Benstein, found in the library. So Phil and brewmaster, Peter Bouckaert, traveled to Belgium to retrieve this unique style lost to the ages. Their first challenge was deciphering antiquated script and outdated units of measurement, but trial and error (and many months of in-house sampling) culminated in 1554, a highly quaffable dark beer with a moderate body and mouthfeel.

On tap @ NB Hub in DIA. Pours a dark reddish, almost black color with a nice white head. Roasted, caramel aroma. Great roasted malt flavor, mildly sweet, but clean and not sticky. Crisp, worth a try...

Not overly-complex, but works in terms of roasted and toasted maltiness. Strong chocolate and coffee tones with a finish that moves into the slightly-hoppy realm.

22 oz. botle, pours a red-tinged dark brown body with light brown head. Sweet malty aroma with hints of caramel and biscuit. Flavor is more of the same with some hints of smoke, coffee, and chocolate. Mouthfeel is light and a little watery. Slightly bitter coffee finish.

Pours a clear dark brown body with off-white head. Aroma is sweet, malty and caramel. Flavor is sweet caramel, malty with no real bitterness. Medium body, thin texture. Finishes someone medium and sweet.

Pours dark brown with medium beige head. Aroma of coffee, yeast, and chocolate. Pleasant mouth feel, creamy, but very light carbonation. Taste is sweet, caramel and chocolaty, seems to end too abruptly but is followed by a very nice long finish, of roast malt, nuts, and burnt coffee with a slight bitter tang. Definitely calls for another.

Bomber from Lakeville Liqour: Pours a dark ruby brown with a nice tan head. Aroma was dusty yeast and dark chocolate. Flavour carried through with the chocolate tones, and a light bitterness.
