Commercial Description:
Born of a flood and centuries-old Belgian text, 1554 Enlightened Black Ale uses a light lager yeast strain and dark chocolaty malts to redefine what dark beer can be. In 1997, a Fort Collins flood destroyed the original recipe our researcher, Phil Benstein, found in the library. So Phil and brewmaster, Peter Bouckaert, traveled to Belgium to retrieve this unique style lost to the ages. Their first challenge was deciphering antiquated script and outdated units of measurement, but trial and error (and many months of in-house sampling) culminated in 1554, a highly quaffable dark beer with a moderate body and mouthfeel.

Dark reddish brown; near black, body with very light aroma of chocolate and coffee. Initial zesty acidic flavor with surprisingly clean, refreshing finish. My all-time personal favorite.

New Belgium is onto something with the 1554. A dark beer that you can drink even when it is 100 F. Wonderful mouth feel, a hint of chocolate sweetness, fantastic!

My favorite black ale. Weyerbacher’s Black Hole aspires to this but misses the light touch and winds up too cough-syrupy. 1554 can be guzzled or sipped non-stop, in a word: drinkable. Also, has a bit of alcohol sting on top so you don’t notice the low content.

A wonderful deep mahogany Ale. Has a creamy light tan head. Tastes sweet with subtle Carmel and chocolate undertones The aroma is similar to the taste. Comes in a bottle, best from tap. currently my Favorite Beer.

When poured, this beer makes a decent head, and has a dark color. The aroma is pleasant. It is very smooth and feels nice on the palate. It has a wonderful sweet, malty flavor. This is a definite must.
