22oz bottle served in an oversized snifter. Pours clear brown, appears black in the glass, topped by a half inch of beige foam. Aromas of cookie, cocoa, toast, and a hint of coffee. The flavor is very similar to the smell but isn’t as "punchy" or not quite as crisp. There is a good deal of roasted character in the finish. Quite interesting and would make a nice jumping off point for a bigger beer. As it is though it comes across a little weak and watery.

Dec 29, 2009 Poured from 12oz. into a New Belgium chalice, that nifty new one. Dark brown with foamy light tan head. Aromas of chocolate malt and raisins a bit of citrus. Mildly sweet to the taste with a hint of bitterness and a good aftertaste that lingers in the mouth. Darn good, I think it is one of their best beers.

Dec 26, 2009 Dark, nice with little sense of hoppiness. Dry, mild and satisfying with a taste that doesn’t linger. I’d drink it again.

Dec 26, 2009 Pours dark, clear amber with a small but fluffy, khaki head. The aroma is of toast, cherries and berries. Mild spices. The flavor is the same with a bit more fruitiness. Orange, banana, and a hint of chocolate. Very light on the palate, borderline watery with a toasted almost roasted/smoky finish. Kind of strange, but pretty good.

Dec 19, 2009 How the hell have I not rated this?! On bottle and tap numerous times the past few years. Had it on tap for apres ski in Steamboat just recently. Clear, dark brown color with black center. Decent creme-colored head with a light aroma of smoke and charred malt. Flavor is simple, with toasted malt and dry dark chocolate. Finishes smooth and easy, with a light body. A consistently good beer from New Belgium.

Dec 14, 2009 12 oz. -> snifter. Poured a very dark brown, with subtle red undertones; an off-white head, which dissipated; subtle lacing. Smells of that classic New Belgium cereal smell, roasted and caramel-y, with a very, very slight sourness. Tastes of coffee; cereal; grasses or hay; and dark, overly ripe fruit. Mouth feel is dry, almost powdery (?!). A fine beer for drinking while - or rather in place of - studying for law school finals. Ah, priorities....

Dec 8, 2009 Pours what appears to be black, but up to light it is a bit translucent, very clear beer. Head is nice and frothy, takes a few minutes for it to subside. Aroma of chocolate and coffee with a touch of earthy hops. Medium-full bodied with a thin, creamy texture. Flavor consists of malty chocolate with medium sweetness and a hint of bitterness. Cleans up real well on the finish. Overall I think this is a great beer. Easy to drink. uet very tasty.
