Commercial Description:
Pull on your wool socks and crack open a 2° Below Ale. This tasty winter warmer started life as a small batch beer brewed for the Al Johnson Uphill Downhill – a telemark ski race in Crested Butte, Colorado. The Uphill Downhill celebrates the exploits of Al Johnson, letter carrier extraordinaire, who delivered mail by ski in the late 1800’s. Dry hopping during fermentation creates a floral nose with a hint of pepper and spicy, subtle undertones. 2° Below provides a bright, hoppy palate and a cheery warm afterglow.

Bottle from Kegs & Barrels in McKinney, TX. Pours a bright clear orange with beige head. Has a piney hop aroma and faint caramel, a little spice. Flavor of some caramel, hop, faint pepper notes, and a small hop bitter. Light-med. body with high carbonation. Overall, surprisingly, turned out to be a pretty boring brew, but not bad, had a little complexity to it.

Poured to birght amber with thick off white head that lingered well and left good lacing. Unfortunately, the look was the most impressive attribute of this beer. Nose and taste were both muted, but what was there were hints of hoppy citrus and malty caramel. Mouthfeel, like other New Belgiums I have had, was thin and watery. Alcohol never did come thru, and the finish was not warming, nor long, as I would expect from a Winter Ale. OK, but not great.

On tap at Liquor Lyles. Pour was an amber color with slightly herbal aroma. Flavor and finish was nothing too impressive, a little bitterness and hint of alcohol. Just ok in my opinion.

12 oz. bottle from a 6 pack. Purchased in hommage to Walt and his love of this brew. Pours a burnt amberish largely transparent hue with big frothy offwhite head. Aromas are bready malts and toffee mixed with nice floral hoppy bouquet. Initial has that "New Belgium" water taste off the bad, carmel malts mix liberally with a nice bitter hoppiness that is not overdone and balances very well. Citrus and toasted biscuity malt mix liberally, and this brew becomes quite a sessioner. Pretty nice for what it is. Cheers!

Fairly clear bright orange, frothy, thin head. Slightly staleish dark bread malt aroma characteristic of several other NB beers. A faint hint of a sharp hoppy note. Flavor is an improvement; full and malty with more strongly concentrated flavors along with some floral and fruity hoppy notes. Lightly bitter finish. Fairly tasty.

12 oz bottle. Poured into a nonic. Kind of an apple juice/golden amber color. Eggshell head that leaves some nice lacing. Earthy and somewhat vegetal malt aroma with an herbal, spicy hop profile. Toasty bready malt flavor with a very English hoppiness. Caramel sweetness and nice subtle balance. Mouthfeel is smooth and dry. Really, extremely easy to drink. Not bad, and not off the mark stylistically, but I have to ask, why the hell would you make your winter beer an ESB? It‘s not hearty, full-bodied, or especially strong.

12oz bottle. Clear burnt orange with a sticky, lacy head. Rough herbal, vegetal, burnt plastic, and toasty malt aroma. The flavor is a bit smoother, with some garlic and plastic, but a decent malt sweetness and body that almost covers that up. Moderate bitterness and hops in the finish. medium bodied with a creamy feeling carbonation level. Almost an ok esb, but to many rough, abrasive flavors. Something is just not working right here.
