I think its the choice of malt that is offensive to the palate, similar to fat tire but this doesnt work with an ESB. The spices also add more complexity but the result is a mess. a10555 (125), West Chester, Ohio, USA

| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Nov 6, 2007 11-6-07 bottle. Clear amber color with short-lived head. Weak spiced cider aroma. Better than pumpkin beers, but still not fantastic. Okay flavor - just somewhat bland and leaves a medicinal coating on the tongue. lb4lb (2011), Austin, Texas, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Nov 6, 2007 Updated: Dec 28, 2007transluscent amber pour with a medium sudsy white head. Smell is metallic and subtle toasty toffee like malt, with a nice bright hop presence as well. Body is surprisingly fuller than expected, and perfectly carbonated. Nice toffee maltiness, faint tartness, then a very light lingering bitter-sweetness in the finish. A pretty nice ESB, and better and hoppier than expected. glkaiser (1171), Seattle, Washington, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Nov 5, 2007 Light copper ale with small head. Grapefruit and pine aroma with a little sweetness. Not much for me to dislike in this one; solid pine/floral hop taste with a nice bitter finish. Balanced well with roasted malt that almost evens out the hops. A solid beer from New Belgium. jsquire (2107), St. Marys, Ohio, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Nov 3, 2007 Clear amber color under an off white head. Sweet malt syrup nose with floral hops. Peppery spice in this beer, with lots of caramel sweetness, light toast, wood, and alcohol that seems stronger than the 6.6% listed. The sweetness seems to fight the spice. Interesting beer. brstp (201), Princeton, New Jersey, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Nov 2, 2007 On tap. Nice orange-tinted brown color, cream-colored white head with thick lacing--covers the whole glass. Aroma of oak, smoke, roasty malt, burned flowery hops. Don’t drink this by a fire. Very smooth taste with caramel, more oak, sweet bourbon, bitter root hop finish, it tastes like I’m drinking a tree. I like it. TheLeadDog (101), Kent, Washington, USA
