Commercial Description:
Pull on your wool socks and crack open a 2° Below Ale. This tasty winter warmer started life as a small batch beer brewed for the Al Johnson Uphill Downhill – a telemark ski race in Crested Butte, Colorado. The Uphill Downhill celebrates the exploits of Al Johnson, letter carrier extraordinaire, who delivered mail by ski in the late 1800’s. Dry hopping during fermentation creates a floral nose with a hint of pepper and spicy, subtle undertones. 2° Below provides a bright, hoppy palate and a cheery warm afterglow.

Solid malty body with a bitter taste. Orange color with faint head. A little spicier and maltier than any other ESB that I’ve tried. On tap at New Belgium.

I love the fall and winter for their seasonal beers. This brew is a fine example. Pours a clear orange/amber with a fine white head. Aroma is complex with notes of pine, sweet bread, and spices. Delicious beer. Hoppy up front with a touch of pine. Mellows to a smooth finish with touches of malt and sweetness. The finish has a bite of pepper. Another fine brew from a great brewer.

On tap at Fritz European Fry House, Bremerton, Washington. An ale is brought to me. It is a brilliant copper-orange with a thick white head. The head mostly stays and leaves intricate lacing in its wake. The aroma is of freshly torn orange peel, graham cracker, spices, pepper, cloves, light caramel, and a faint floral background. The flavor follows suit—orange peel, graham cracker, and cloves most prominent—with the briskness of newly fallen snow on the pallet and a light hint of alcohol on the finish. Wonderful.

355 ml bottle. Pours a light cooper with an adequate off-white head. Hoppy, somewhat spicy nose. Medium body. Nice malt profile offset by plenty of hop bitterness. Lasting, rather peppery finish.

Sample from bottle at West Lakeview Liquors, Chicago with rep. Clear medium amber color with white head. Citrus hop aroma, not much else. Flavor is grainy, citrus hops with medium bitterness, malt balance. Medium body and well carbonated. Okay, but too grainy in flavor. I actually rated this higher than I actually liked it.

Clear orange color with a medium head. Aroma of caramel malts and floral/perfume hops. Tastes of caramel and apricot with a fair amount of floral and perfumy hops.

Bottle. Poured clear amber with lasting white head. Some lacing. Aroma of flowers, hops, toast and roast. Light to medium body with a hoppy note and a malt bone. Fast finish.
