Commercial Description:
Pull on your wool socks and crack open a 2° Below Ale. This tasty winter warmer started life as a small batch beer brewed for the Al Johnson Uphill Downhill – a telemark ski race in Crested Butte, Colorado. The Uphill Downhill celebrates the exploits of Al Johnson, letter carrier extraordinaire, who delivered mail by ski in the late 1800’s. Dry hopping during fermentation creates a floral nose with a hint of pepper and spicy, subtle undertones. 2° Below provides a bright, hoppy palate and a cheery warm afterglow.

An excellent seasonal ale from New Belgium. Strong hops with first sip. Amber color with decent head. Wish this wasn’t just a seasonal.

From reading alot of the reviews on this one either 1 of 2 things are going on. This beer is different in every batch OR palates are not picking up very different things. What I got out of this was a medium amber pour, decent head and nominal lacing. Aroma was not strong but of subtle nuttiness , malt and hints of wood. Taste wise slightly different. Like a thicker amber ale with a modest malt background and slightly woody finish. Very drinkable tho unremarkable. Also reminded me since I had one earlier was a watery version of Autumnal Fire.

Bottle. This one has a very strong, unique aroma when you poor it. You can smell it two seats away at the table. I did not drink this one at the recommended temperature of 37 degrees F. May taste significantly different than where I drank it at. An interesting beer. I am going to pick up a couple more before I form my final opinion.

12 oz bottle from Henry’s. Winter 2007 batch. Pours a rich copper color with a small white head that recedes to 1/8 inch. Minimal lacing. Aroma was spicy with walnuts and biter hops. The flavor was a surprise, as it turns out the aroma is a false foreshadowing. There is a big bold espresso coffee flavor with mocha set in mildly bittersweet hops backdrop. Mouthfeel is full, thick and chewy. Finish is medium in duration and dry with a slight astringency. Overall: this is a first rate winter brew. Recommended.

Bottle drunk 5/25. Glowing orange with fluffy off white head. Light caramel aroma. Very smooth on the palate with nice lite caramel/nutty flavors. Lively carbonation. Light sweet roasted finish.

Pours crystal clear with an amber color with a ruby touch to it. Decent sized head. Nose is extremely heavy on the hops. Just overpowering almost. Flavor is even and smooth, but I get something odd on there. I just can’t place it (inexperience), but it’s almost like a port like character that peeks out at you. At the start you get an almost thin layer of pine which fades to what I think is an alcohol tone after some time. Feel is a little thinner than I would think would be appropriate, but it is pretty drinkable, though not the greatest example of the style by any means.
