Commercial Description:
Pull on your wool socks and crack open a 2° Below Ale. This tasty winter warmer started life as a small batch beer brewed for the Al Johnson Uphill Downhill – a telemark ski race in Crested Butte, Colorado. The Uphill Downhill celebrates the exploits of Al Johnson, letter carrier extraordinaire, who delivered mail by ski in the late 1800’s. Dry hopping during fermentation creates a floral nose with a hint of pepper and spicy, subtle undertones. 2° Below provides a bright, hoppy palate and a cheery warm afterglow.

Dark golden, creamy off white head. Nose seemed to be a combo of leafy earthy hops and spiced chocolate mint tones. Soft earth and peppery hop flavors realized up front, light melon tones at mid palate, but gets slowly backed by an herbal-like floral quality. Interesting to say the least. Lighter side of medium bodied, medium carbonation, quick drying, soft peppery spiced finish. I don’t know what to think, but I do know it’s unique. Different in my book is cool....

aroma muttled hops, sweet malt, and something spicy and almost chocolate. taste is sweet with the same spicyness to it and some earthy undertones. pretty good with tastes i cant put my finger on. ok but not nearly the best bitters out there.

Bottle. Golden pour with an off white head. Aroma of sweet malt, some yeast, a bit of smoke, and a bit of funk. Flavor of honey, brown sugar, some yeast and some spices. Smooth mouthfeel, nice carbonation for the flavors and body with a bittersweet finish.

Not a train wreck, but at least a derailment for me. Tried at brewery, tried from bottle, tried from tap again - just never struck a melodious chord nor can I say just exactly what it is that it doesn’t do for me. Not offensive nor over the top, but the hops just don’t flow with it all and leave me wondering what it’s all about. Sorta a beer equivalent of my life.

The aroma is subtle, yet has some nice resin in there. Brilliant golden in color with a frothy white head. Crisp and slightly tangy flavor, some melons in the finish and not very bitter at all. Seems like caramel and crystal malts are underneath looking for an identity, but cannot find one.

I tried this beer the first time this year, I beleive it is a newer brew from this brewery. It has a nice amber/brown color. I have to say it is not my style of beer due to its very hoppy flavor. But it is good overall.

Bottle. Pours amber with a small white head. Aroma is very much like spruce to my reckoning (not pine, mind you, but spruce), with a backbone of biscuity and somewhat sweet malt, and small bit of spices. Flavor is malty, with biscuits and caramel, some spice, and finishing with some light hops. An interesting concoction that I’d drink again.

Nice citrusy type aromas. Mild hoppiness. Lots of the Fat Tire character in this brew, with the toasty bitterness and all. Agreed with Whaleman that this seems a little redundant in the New Belgium line.
