Commercial Description:
Pull on your wool socks and crack open a 2° Below Ale. This tasty winter warmer started life as a small batch beer brewed for the Al Johnson Uphill Downhill – a telemark ski race in Crested Butte, Colorado. The Uphill Downhill celebrates the exploits of Al Johnson, letter carrier extraordinaire, who delivered mail by ski in the late 1800’s. Dry hopping during fermentation creates a floral nose with a hint of pepper and spicy, subtle undertones. 2° Below provides a bright, hoppy palate and a cheery warm afterglow.

Unremarkable. Normally I’m fond of New Belgiums beers, but this one did not stand out to me. The aroma Is interesting. The pepper smell is noticable as are some floral hints. The flavor and mouthfeel however are where the beer goes off the tracks for me. The flavor was thinner than I had hoped, and the hops was understated. Though not a bad beer there was nothing that made it stand out to me. I picked up no bright cheery alfterglow.

12 oz bottle from a 12 pack purchased at Mac’s on West Peachtree. Nice fluffy head that sticks around for quite some time. The aroma is not very pungent or nuanced; I get a slight toast and malt aroma. Damn that is depressing. Flavor is the same i.e. slight malt and toast flavor. Not incredibly smooth, but it has an average palate. Hops play virtually no role in the beer. I’m sorry this is a huge let down. Honestly, its seems as though New Belgium didn’t put much thought into this one. Just a very bland and boring ESB.

Great hop-malt combo, nice ABV, and an delightful finish make up for other lacking qualities.

Very interesting aroma, in particular, giving it that pepper quality amid strong hops. But the flavor profile is much less distinctive. It is a more perky beer with a more tingly palate than I would have thought in a Bitter/ESB style--when I was drinking it I was thinking it seemed more like one of the high-hopped Belgian ales, but that could have been the influence of the brewery name on my thinking. Decent, drinkable, but not something I would return to.

Amber pour with big slightly off white head. Aroma of roasty malt and hops. Citrus hops dominate the flavor. Some malty ale backing. This isn’t terrible, but not as good as the hoptober. The strong hoppiness of this beer makes it palatable, but the malt notes are pretty typical of NB. This is like being disappointed and kicked in the balls.

Hmmm, thought I rated this four years ago. 12oz bottle, Best Before 12FEB10. Clear medium orange with a 1 1/2 finger off-white head, pretty good retention. Dominant hops in the nose are floral, earthy, and lightly spicy. Slightly behind that are some toasty biscuity malts and lightly fruity yeast. The flavor is much the same with the hops toning it back a bit. The finish is semi-dry with bitterness around a 2. Light to moderate carbonation with a light body. Not too bad.

I didn’t take any notes on this one, but I remember being fairly disappointed.

This is pretty tasty, and reminds me remotely of the Goose Island Harvest Ale from the fall. The aroma is lovely hops but not too bitter, and the flavor has a nice balance between sweet maltiness and hops.
