But the flavor profile is much less distinctive. It is a more perky beer with a more tingly palate than I would have thought in a Bitter/ESB style--when I was drinking it I was thinking it seemed more like one of the high-hopped Belgian ales, but that could have been the influence of the brewery name on my thinking. Decent, drinkable, but not something I would return to.

| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Dec 27, 2009 Pretty decent brew. I was surprised I had never tried this one. A very good winter brew. Really hits the spot on a cold day. Hoppy, spicy taste with a nice winter brew finish. One of New Belgium’s best. noncaloric (628), Madison, Wisconsin, USA
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 2/5 | 11/20 | Dec 27, 2009 Clear gold pour, a modest off-white head still leaves an abundant lacing. Aroma is strongly hoppy, comparable to grapefruit zest. Flavor is also hop dominated, but there is little malt character to bear up the grapefruit zest bitterness. Overall comes off as a nice but one dimensional beer. Possibly as a result, seems thin on the palate. Tmoney99 (4790), Cincinnati, Ohio, USA

Poured clear copper color with a large frothy off-white head that mostly lasting with good lacing. Moderate toasted sweet malt and floral hop aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture and soft carbonation. Medium bittersweet flavor with a medium bittersweet finish of moderate duration. Solid drinkable beer.

| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | Dec 24, 2009 Pours a rich amber color wtih a decent foamy slightly off-white head. Aroma is very hoppy with plenty of caramel malt. The flavor is malt, hops and pine with a bit of spice. A decent beer - tasted like a spin-off winter version of Fat Tire. rayg1 (445), Ft. | 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Dec 23, 2009 Bottle from the brother-in-law. Pours a clear copper with a very small off-white head. Aroma has hints of floral hops with hints of pepper and caramel. Malty flavor is toasted malt, pine, caramel and cream. Very bitter and crisp finish. Well balanced and enjoyable, I would have this again anytime. One of the most peppery brews I’ve had in a while the flavor was very distinct from other highly hopped beers I’ve had before that seem to just run together, good stuff

| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Dec 22, 2009 Pours a clear coppery amber with a fine-bubbled, slightly orangy off-white head. Aroma is malty, fruity and slightly spicy. Lively, mouth-filling flavor is spicy with woody and hoppy undertones. Texture is tingly, fizzy and sassy. Definitely worth at least a try. joechristenson (31), Minnesota, USA
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 12/20 | Dec 22, 2009 Candy and caramel notes in the nose, plus some grassy notes. Pours amber/copper with small head. Caramel flavor balanced by earthy hops -- nice and silky on the palate, just the right amount of carbonation. Still, this beer is fairly one-dimensional, and a bit too straightforwardly sweet for my tastes. I feel like more could be done on the malt side to bring out the potential of the hops. Hearty copper red pint with nice head. Nose is sweet spicy and hops. Taste is same, with plenty of fruity sweetness, caramel, and hops. Had a number of decent beers on tap, and I stuck with this one for a couple.
