Commercial Description:
Before there was New Belgium Brewing, there was Abbey Ale. It was the first beer of home brewer and New Belgium co-founder, Jeff Lebesch. So the love brews deep for Abbey Grand Cru. To date, Abbey Ale has garnered no less than 16 medals at the Great American Beer Festival–7 of those being Gold. Take that award-winning recipe, precisely increase the hops, malt and fermentation time, and the result is a Grand Cru worth collecting. And that’s exactly what many of us at New Belgium, as well as a growing number of fans, have done. By saving it for a few years, Abbey Grand Cru will continue to improve and age deliciously. Optimal storage is a cool (40-55°), dark place where the bottles can remain undisturbed. But lest we forget, it is a great beer and great beers deserve to be enjoyed. Best served at cellar temperature in a wide-mouthed glass. Toast to the monk’s virtue and have a heavenly experience.

Cold 22oz bottle: Pours a lovely deep reddish orange hue wth a minimal ring of tan bubbles that quickly diminishes. Aroma is of rich malts, nice yeast, dark fruits (cherries/plums) and notes of caramel and alcohol. Taste is of rich malts and fruit (cherries/plums) with mild, earthy hops. Oily texture with mild carbonation. Ending is malty into raisin with notes of caramel and alcohol.

Bomber: Pours a dark orange/red color with a medium off-white head, cherries, caramel, bready yeast, plums, and alcohol in the nose, heavy bodied with a thick mouthfeel and subtle carbonation. Starts and ends very sweet.

On tap, pours deep burnt caramel with a very thin tcream colored head. The nose is rich and full with brown sugar, dried fruit, caramel and some toffee. The flavor is quite the same, with a bit of a dry mid to finish along with some earthiness to it.

Bottle. Pours a light brown/red color with a good size tan head. Smells heavily of dark fruit and warm alcoahl scent. Tastes of fruit, yeast, and is over all very rich feeling in the mouth. Great over all beer!

22 oz bottle. Pours a nice light brownish caramel, almost amber color with a large tan head. Lots of dark fruits in the aroma. I mainly get plums and raisins, with a bit of the Belgian funk thrown in. The flavor is similar to the taste, with lots of dark fruits coming forward. I thought it had a bit of an alcohol note in there too, but that’s what you get with a big beer like this. Very easy drinker!

Draught.. Poured dark brown with thick foamy head. Aroma of caramel and malt. FUll over all the mouth malty flavour, more caramel and candy sugar. Candy like finish, with a tiny bit of hop. A lekker dubbel.

Once again thanks to thejoeshow! Pours a burnt amber/orange color. Huge funky citrusy bite on the nose with a good dose of raisin, bazooka joe, and a nice yeasty funky spiciness. Palate is sweet, but not overly, with a nice yeasty dryness that finishes it quickely with a nice black pepper character. Nice notes of banana, caramel, clove and an oaky butteryness finish it all out.

on tap at papago... pours clear with a slight haze an coppery shade of amber topped by a sandy white head and light spots of lacing. sweet aroma of red table grapes, raisins, bubble gum, lots of yeasty spice, earth and a bit of meat. lots of spice in the flavor mixes with a woodiness, raisins, a bunch of malt ( but not a whole bunch of sweetness ) and banana. spicy finish with a huge dose of floral yeast. salty yeast aftertaste lingers. medium body goes down easy...
