Commercial Description:
Before there was New Belgium Brewing, there was Abbey Ale. It was the first beer of home brewer and New Belgium co-founder, Jeff Lebesch. So the love brews deep for Abbey Grand Cru. To date, Abbey Ale has garnered no less than 16 medals at the Great American Beer Festival–7 of those being Gold. Take that award-winning recipe, precisely increase the hops, malt and fermentation time, and the result is a Grand Cru worth collecting. And that’s exactly what many of us at New Belgium, as well as a growing number of fans, have done. By saving it for a few years, Abbey Grand Cru will continue to improve and age deliciously. Optimal storage is a cool (40-55°), dark place where the bottles can remain undisturbed. But lest we forget, it is a great beer and great beers deserve to be enjoyed. Best served at cellar temperature in a wide-mouthed glass. Toast to the monk’s virtue and have a heavenly experience.

Beautiful amber in colour. Aroma is sweet, caramel, toffee. Flavour was sweet, yeasty, slight bitterness and alcohol. Finishes sweet, malty with a slight bitterness.

Four year old bottle courtesy of Kansas New Belgium Rep, Scott Poure. Aroma is sweet dark fruits and toffee. Flavor is sweet and complex. Good banana and clove, perhaps pear. Alcohol is well hidden. Glad I finally got to try this, and if it was in production for retail, I would purchase this regularly.

I made the mistake of trying this when I toured the New Belgium brewery a while back. I say mistake because now it really bugs me that I can’t get it anywhere else. A lovely amber color and a thick, lasting head. Sweet, fruity aroma. Wonderfully complex flavor with hints of sweet fruit and clove spice. A great mix.

Fantastic beer, and a richer version of Abbey as the description tells you. 9.4% alcohol... Woooooo. If they sold this at the liquor stores I’d buy it all the time. It’s only available at the New Belgium Brewery, and make sure to give it a try if/when you go there.

Had this beer on 3/27/2001. Color is a deep amber with good carbonation and head. Aroma is a strong malt scent. Taste is sweet and rich. Starting with a medium body it goes down with a sharp rich feel. Finish is a rich sweet malt falvor with a shrap sweet end.

I had this one on tap at the Bolder Strong Ale Fest and just got around to writing about it. The aroma was like Abbey squared, just more aromatic with a stronger nose of clove and banana. Flavor was great, if you like Abbey you will love this beer. I drank around 15-appx 2oz (sometimes more) fills, and the ABV could really be noticed. This is an excellent session beer, just like the normal Abbey.

tap. reddish clear body with a thin ring of a head. smells of cinnamon, banana, chocolate, and murphy’s fries with a noticeable malt ball scent. flavor is cocoa puffs, seriously, cocoa puffs w/whole milk. ginger note, and a sweet flavor lingers. cereal with a shot of irish cream. damn, hells yeah.

sampled on tap at the 5th Boulder Strong Ale Fest. pours clear reddish brown with small white head. very malty nose with plums, raisin fruit notes. very dark fruity taste with alcohol warming. this is tasty. and my favorite non-sour from NB.3.9.

9/29/08, on tap at MapRoom. pours amber with creamy biege head. nose of rum raisins, bready and a yeasty. raisins, toffee, a bit toasted malts, and yeasty round the flavor out nicely. a nice bit of alcohol follows it all, with a med body and smooth carbonation feel. really tasty dark belgian ale.
