Commercial Description:
Before there was New Belgium Brewing, there was Abbey Ale. It was the first beer of home brewer and New Belgium co-founder, Jeff Lebesch. So the love brews deep for Abbey Grand Cru. To date, Abbey Ale has garnered no less than 16 medals at the Great American Beer Festival–7 of those being Gold. Take that award-winning recipe, precisely increase the hops, malt and fermentation time, and the result is a Grand Cru worth collecting. And that’s exactly what many of us at New Belgium, as well as a growing number of fans, have done. By saving it for a few years, Abbey Grand Cru will continue to improve and age deliciously. Optimal storage is a cool (40-55°), dark place where the bottles can remain undisturbed. But lest we forget, it is a great beer and great beers deserve to be enjoyed. Best served at cellar temperature in a wide-mouthed glass. Toast to the monk’s virtue and have a heavenly experience.

Bottle from NB Brewery poured into trappist glass - Pours dark cranberry red with a minimal off white head; Dried fruit (raisin), various fruit esters, yeasty bread, and red wine to the nose; Alcohol, more fruit esters, malt, a little red wine, caramel, yeast, and a woody note on the initial taste; An dry, oaky, aged biscuit aftertaste; Nice creamy full body; Fairly low carbonation; I could smell this all day. Great stuff that I really wish I had some more of. This summer I’ll be getting some more back out in CO! Wonderful stuff.

Clear amber/red with little head and some particulate. Floral, fruity aroma with caramel, fusel alcohol and some woodiness. Sweet and rich but not cloying. Fruity caramel flavor with some underlying spice and banana. Not incredibly complex but pleasant and clean with little alcohol noticable. Nice.

Thanks to bditty187 for the opportunity to sample thisone. Pours a dark red tinged brown, almost mahogany, with a dense one finger head that settles slowly to a soapy cap. The subsequent lacing is very thick and sticky. Smell; dark fruits with plums and dates with a little bit of cherries thrown in. There’s a bit of a oaky presence with vanilla, as well as some caramel and candied sugar. Taste; the dark fruits come out very nicely with plums, dates, grapes and cherries. Chocolate, caramel and candied sugar and a nice sweetness to a bit of an alcohol bite towards the middle. In the finish there’s bit bit of a chalkiness that must be from the yeasts. Mouthfeel/Drinkability; mouthfeel is medium to full bodied, and with the alcohol and chalky feeling this is a little drying, but otherwise very good. Drinkabilty is good, and would be even higher with a lower abv.

I was told by Dr. Bill that this bottle was from the original batch and was 5 years old. Poured a hazy dark brown color with a hint of red and a small off-white head. The aroma had a good amount of malty and estery notes. Some phenolic clove blended in. Sweet and toasty flavor with some yeasty esters. Pretty tasty and held up well if this is 5 years old.

Tap at Toronado. Pours with a very dark color and a medium head. Nice aromas of yeast and grains and flavors of yeast, grain and some hop bitterness. Solid body and a lingering well balanced finish. A very nice complex beer.

Finally my White Whale is conquered. Off red color with a lasting head. Aroma is cherry, and caramel mixed with dried fruits and toffee. Taste is beautifully carbonated with a light cotton candy, sweet grains and dried fruits. I need more of this.

Tap @ Toronado. Deep translucent chestnut with an amber-like glow, and a creamy tannish wrung along the outskirts. Ripe chocolate banana bubblegum prophetically reaches the nose, joining forces with rubber soles and cloves, explicit banana nougat, brown sugar, rum raisin and beet sugar. Fresh flavor rushes in, paving the way with fluorinated banana-chocolate-caramel syrup. Buttery pralines - like flavor, like texture - intermingle with a trio of vanilla, honey and cloves. Rubbery chestnuts and hot buttered rum compliment a maple oat composure. Medium bodied and a touch oily, tucked away with a brown sugared biscuit wrapped around a sugary beet center. Ample carbonation with a boozy feel and hearty lightening of the head. Beet sugar and brown sugar marinating golden raisins ring with Bernardus-like qualities in the end. Splendidly well done.

12-oz. bottle given to me by one of the co-owners of Choice City Butcher and Deli in Ft. Collins, Colorado. Pours brown with a tall creamy off-white head, sticky and spotty lacing. Aroma is malt (biscuit, cereal), yeast (wheat dough, cellar) and fruit (cherry, banana, pineapple), vanilla notes. Creamy caramel malt and brown sugar flavor, medium bitterness and moderate acidity, wheaty dough and banana. Medium bodied, creamy and slightly thin palate with a fizzy finish.
