Commercial Description:
Before there was New Belgium Brewing, there was Abbey Ale. It was the first beer of home brewer and New Belgium co-founder, Jeff Lebesch. So the love brews deep for Abbey Grand Cru. To date, Abbey Ale has garnered no less than 16 medals at the Great American Beer Festival–7 of those being Gold. Take that award-winning recipe, precisely increase the hops, malt and fermentation time, and the result is a Grand Cru worth collecting. And that’s exactly what many of us at New Belgium, as well as a growing number of fans, have done. By saving it for a few years, Abbey Grand Cru will continue to improve and age deliciously. Optimal storage is a cool (40-55°), dark place where the bottles can remain undisturbed. But lest we forget, it is a great beer and great beers deserve to be enjoyed. Best served at cellar temperature in a wide-mouthed glass. Toast to the monk’s virtue and have a heavenly experience.

On tap at Toronado. This light brown ale poured with a thin off-white head. It was a little disappointing in that the flavor was somewhat flat. I’ll try it in the bottle to see if it was just a bad keg. Even so, this beer had a fuller body than the standard NB Abbey Ale, as well as some nice candy and spice flavors.

This was a surprise after having the regular NB Abbey. Richer reddish-brown color. At 9.4% this one really packed a punch. Similar banana and fruity notes with yeasty, clove and breadloaf things happening. This was the definite older brother of abbey and it could have had a little too pronounced alcohol tang, but it was flavorful enough to not be bad.

Bottle @ Falling Rock poured a clear reddish brown with a small lasting amber head. Aromas of raisins, bananas, carmel, vanilla and spices. Palate was medium bodied and smooth. Flavors of bananas, raisins, brown sugar and spices with a smooth slightly sweet finish.

On draft at the brewery, 4/12/06: Stonrg raisin aroma. Sweet sugary essence. Little too "over the top" for most, probably even me. Wow factor of banana brown sugar.

Sample at the 4th Boulder Strong Ale Fest. Beer pours a hazy, medium amber-brown color with a small, frothy, white, mostly and quickly diminishing head. The aroma is malty with sweet notes of roasted grain and caramel; hoppy with moderate notes of herb; yeasty with light notes of bread dough, moderate notes of sharp cheese; heavy notes of banana, clove, light notes of wood and vanilla, heavy note of alcohol. The flavor is lightly sweet, lightly bitter with an average-length, lightly sweet, heavily bitter finish with a slightly husky aftertaste. The body is light-to-medium, the texture is watery and the carbonation is lively.

Pours copper/amber with a slight haze and an off white head. Smells of alcohol, candi sugar, some plums. Taste is fruity with some nutty undertones and a decent sweet finish.

Sweet, fruity, candy-like alcoholic aroma has some light corn notes. Hazy burnished copper coloured body with plenty of suspended yeast is topped by a low off white head that recedes rapidly to ring. Fruity flavour is strong with plenty of doughy yeast character and light twinges of alcohol. Medium body with fairly low carbonation. Bottle sampled at DenverLogan’s GABF 2005 wrap-up.

Huge thanks to Crosling for bringing this to Logans, Old, very old (not sure how old). Pours a golden amber color, small white head. Aroma is spicy, caramel, floral, very nice. Flavor is more spice, lots of sweet malt. I dig this.
