Commercial Description:
Before there was New Belgium Brewing, there was Abbey Ale. It was the first beer of home brewer and New Belgium co-founder, Jeff Lebesch. So the love brews deep for Abbey Grand Cru. To date, Abbey Ale has garnered no less than 16 medals at the Great American Beer Festival–7 of those being Gold. Take that award-winning recipe, precisely increase the hops, malt and fermentation time, and the result is a Grand Cru worth collecting. And that’s exactly what many of us at New Belgium, as well as a growing number of fans, have done. By saving it for a few years, Abbey Grand Cru will continue to improve and age deliciously. Optimal storage is a cool (40-55°), dark place where the bottles can remain undisturbed. But lest we forget, it is a great beer and great beers deserve to be enjoyed. Best served at cellar temperature in a wide-mouthed glass. Toast to the monk’s virtue and have a heavenly experience.

On tap at Brouwer’s Tour de Fat afterparty. Pours mostly clear copper/brown with a nice tan head. Ashy caramel and banana aroma and taste. Thick and sticky with a charred malty finish.

Tap at Toronado. Deep ruby brown, poured with basically no head. Big sweet aroma, cherries, dark fruit, banana bread, and wisps of nuttiness. Flavor really sweet, dark fruits, black cherries, spices/nuts for a slight banana bread flavor, also something vaguely cough syrupy behind all the sweetness. Could have used more balance to the sweetness for my taste.

Growler courtesy fogdog. Pours a dark brown with a small, bubbly tan head that leaves some patches of lacing behind. The aroma shows dark fruit, caramel, raisins, clove, and some spicy yeast as well. The flavor follows with the dark fruit and caramel coming through with figs, raisins, and orange zest. The yeast and spices are found on the backend. Medium bodied, smooth, and fairly easy to drink even with the alcohol. The dark fruits really come through on the finish. Solid dubbel from New Belgium.

CPLYFO 09. Growler from FogDog! Pours a nice clear dark amber with a nice lasting head. Aroma is sharp dark crystal special B malts, fruity, raisin, sharp almost burnt toffee, more fruits- apple, pear raisin with a nice phenolic yeastiness- yet still somewhat clean. Good full flavor without getting too harsh or estery- phenols are in check as well. good sweetness and a dark bready yeastiness, peppery spices, slight green and earthiness, with an orange- oiliness and zest as well as it warms.. Better than expected coming from NB, and for a Dubbel.

Clear amber color, Lots of sugar sweetness, dark fruits, caramel, light spice, and oranges. It’s good, but I was expecting more.

Had at otown throwdown. Really nice sweet caramel, not too sweet though. Candy sugar and fruit make up the taste. Pretty good.

Pours clear copper with a soapy off-white head. The aroma has raisins, dates, Belgian yeast, nice caramel, anise, light phenolic spice and brown sugar. Medium / thick body with semi-sharp carbonation. The flavor starts with dark malt, dates, raisins, light sourness and brown sugar. The finish has light sourness, dark caramel and dark fruit. A very nice beer.
