Commercial Description:
Before there was New Belgium Brewing, there was Abbey Ale. It was the first beer of home brewer and New Belgium co-founder, Jeff Lebesch. So the love brews deep for Abbey Grand Cru. To date, Abbey Ale has garnered no less than 16 medals at the Great American Beer Festival–7 of those being Gold. Take that award-winning recipe, precisely increase the hops, malt and fermentation time, and the result is a Grand Cru worth collecting. And that’s exactly what many of us at New Belgium, as well as a growing number of fans, have done. By saving it for a few years, Abbey Grand Cru will continue to improve and age deliciously. Optimal storage is a cool (40-55°), dark place where the bottles can remain undisturbed. But lest we forget, it is a great beer and great beers deserve to be enjoyed. Best served at cellar temperature in a wide-mouthed glass. Toast to the monk’s virtue and have a heavenly experience.

Growler, courtesy fogdog. Another long lost want list beer finally scored. The pour yields a clear, dark, chestnut brown body. A frothy, bubbly, cream colored head leaves spotty lacing behind. Aromas include caramel, bubblegum, and clove, with hints of spicy orange peel and gingerbread. Some dark fruit comes through as well, particularly dates and perhaps a little raisin. Flavors are similarly dark and fruity, with ample dark caramel and candy sugar. Fig and prune come through, while orange rind and light coriander brighten things up a bit. Medium-full, smooth, and lightly carbonated. Easy going for 9.5%. This is a very solid dubbel.

Crushed with CaryTheDude and Jakebra at the brewery. It was free, so it gets points for that. Brown pour with tan head. Sweet, sugary, appley aroma. Flavor is nice, pruney, appley candi sugar. This isn’t as bad as the dude suggests, but its not that great either.

Growler. Pours a clear amber color, with a small off white head. Smells of sweet dark fruits, and dark malts, with bits of honey inthere as well. The flavor was pretty sweet, with big doses of candy sugar and the dark fruits combined. Went down pretty smooth, very drinkable for a dubbel. maybe a touch undercarbonated, but didnt tke away from it too much. Not bad at all.

C&PLYFOTD: Growler, courtesy fogdog. Clear copper pour, thin white lacing and sheen of a head. Dark fruits are big in the nose, full of chocolate and bright, flowery hops. Flavor is ripe with candi sugar, dark fruits, nice dry roast and a slight hazy tropical finish. Very balanced and yummy, was definitely surprised by how drinkable this is.

Sampled at C&P Otown Throwdown, big thanks to whoever brought this! Sampled from a growler. Dark red brown pour. Sweet malt candy sugar aroma. Candy sweet malt body with nice touches of orange peel and coriander. May be a touch too sweet, but good.
