Commercial Description:
Before there was New Belgium Brewing, there was Abbey Ale. It was the first beer of home brewer and New Belgium co-founder, Jeff Lebesch. So the love brews deep for Abbey Grand Cru. To date, Abbey Ale has garnered no less than 16 medals at the Great American Beer Festival–7 of those being Gold. Take that award-winning recipe, precisely increase the hops, malt and fermentation time, and the result is a Grand Cru worth collecting. And that’s exactly what many of us at New Belgium, as well as a growing number of fans, have done. By saving it for a few years, Abbey Grand Cru will continue to improve and age deliciously. Optimal storage is a cool (40-55°), dark place where the bottles can remain undisturbed. But lest we forget, it is a great beer and great beers deserve to be enjoyed. Best served at cellar temperature in a wide-mouthed glass. Toast to the monk’s virtue and have a heavenly experience.

On tap at Gingerman Austin. Pours ruby red with little head. A big cold. Nose is sweet and spicy. Taste is sweet, alcoholic, spicy. Very easy to drink. Chewy palate and better as it warms. Vinuous. Nice beer.

22oz from a good friend - thanks, Jeff!!! What a lovely beer on a chilly night, a really impressive example of the style. Dark brown pour with some crisp carbonation. Lively nose with nuts, yeast, and tart fruits mingling well. The mouthfeel is full and impressive, the flavor vibrant and superbly suited to style. Warming but not overpowering, its subtleties are nicely appreciated.

Draft at the Bistro in Hayward. Amber brown pour with some frothy head. Aroma is dark fruit, vanilla, sweet candy sugar malt. Flavor is the same, very rich and sweet, dates, more vanilla. Good palate as well.

Tap: Clear, dark gold with a fizzy off-white head. It has a yeasty, perfumy aroma with a hard core perfumy sweet flavor. Overly yeastified. Yuck, too Belgian for me! I suppose it is good for the style.

On tap at 1702 - Pours a hazy brown color with a small light tan head. Aroma is dark esters and faint yeast. Flavor is esters, light yeast, and a hint of toasted chocolate. What I like best about this beer is that no one component masks another. Everything comes together nicely. A smooth, easy drinking Belgian ale. Be nice to find this bottled in the regular distribution system.

On tap at New Belgium. Poured a muddled brown color with some red highlights and a thin off-white head that receded for a ring. Lacks much aroma, with some light chocolate, some faint dark fruits, bubble gum, a light yeastiness, and alcohol. Smooth, moderately sweet entry leads into a light fruitiness with some faint spice and a light yeastiness that is overpowered by phenols and rubbing alcohol. I could not finish my 4 ounce taster at the brewery because of the horrid finish. Low carbonation and thin on the palate. I do not like to say beers suck because I understand the time and effort that goes into making them, but this sucks.

Tap at Uber. The aroma is very estery with some spice, dark fruits, must. A touch of alcohol. Amber pour with a super thin head and some very light lacing. Flavors of raisin, caramel, spice, yeasty notes. A little bit of alcohol. The body seems soft, and the carbonation is light. I thought this might have been a little too boozy for me.
