Commercial Description:
Before there was New Belgium Brewing, there was Abbey Ale. It was the first beer of home brewer and New Belgium co-founder, Jeff Lebesch. So the love brews deep for Abbey Grand Cru. To date, Abbey Ale has garnered no less than 16 medals at the Great American Beer Festival–7 of those being Gold. Take that award-winning recipe, precisely increase the hops, malt and fermentation time, and the result is a Grand Cru worth collecting. And that’s exactly what many of us at New Belgium, as well as a growing number of fans, have done. By saving it for a few years, Abbey Grand Cru will continue to improve and age deliciously. Optimal storage is a cool (40-55°), dark place where the bottles can remain undisturbed. But lest we forget, it is a great beer and great beers deserve to be enjoyed. Best served at cellar temperature in a wide-mouthed glass. Toast to the monk’s virtue and have a heavenly experience.

On-tap at Stone. Pours clearish, reddish brown with no head. Smells sweet and malty, slight red fruit, slight rubbing alcohol. Tastes sweet and caramelly malty with a lingering alcohol burn, slightly fruity as well. Medium body, good carbonation.

Awesome hook up form pasite2002 who sent me a 1996 bottle that he has kept well cellared for over a decade. Thanks a lot Wayne! Aromas is extremely raisin-y, actually its all raisin. There is some ashy charcoal in there as well. Taste is starting to lose some flavors from the age, getting a bit watery. The dark malts are still coming through though, basically a Belgian dough-y dark bread. A light body that goes down easy. Not much oxidation /cardboard but more so an evaporation of flavor, another common way age affects beer. I am completely surprised how well this has aged, I mean maybe 5 years ago this was still spectacular but heck its really surprising. I wonder if this will ever be bottled again.
22oz bottle, New Belgium snifter/tulip. Thanks again Wayne.

Draft at Flying Saucer KC. The pour was dark brown with some ruby hues. This beer was dominated by banana esters. That’s pretty much the long and short of it. I liked it quite a bit. Medium body with active carbonation. Dry finish. Good stuff.

Mild smell followed by a cherry sour malt onslaught. Great color and looks great in the glass. The funk is kept in check and it all balances out nicely. Maybe not the best of style, but a solid entry.

On tap at the Draught House 40th Anniversary Party. Pours dark brownish color with a small beige head. Smell is fruity, quite yeasty, lightly alcoholic and nutty. Taste is much the same with a very strong Dubbel like yeasty, fruity, nutty flavor with an almost gumminess to the yeast or perhaps the malt. Medium body and carbonation and the alcohol presence is a bit noticeable and unnecesary. Not a big fan of this.

Draft at Uber. Wow, what a shocking disappointment. It’s not like this beer has had an unbearable run-up of recent hype; it’s been well-known as a good beer for a long time, but not with an annoying drone of marketing-inspired buzz around it. But this keg was just so banal. Pours a deep mahogany brown with garnet highlights and a thin, brief, slightly moussy tannish head. Big nose of red apples, brown apples, and alcohol. Creamy medium body with very soft carb. Alcohol comes right out at you. Red apples, brown apples, and a bit of sherry follow. Sticky, sherry-like finish. Something not so good happened here. What a shame.

On tap at Belmont Station. Pours darker copper/brown with a tall fluffy beige head leaving thick lacing behind. Big fruity character, caramel and lots of clove. The alcohol shows and it tastes a bit hot, but still a nice brew. Very dry finish, lots of esters, overall a bit deeper fruit character then the regular abbey and a touch sweeter up front.

Stately maroon-amber, ring of head, looks a bit undercarbonated. Aroma of raisins and plums and caramel, Special B and Caramunich grains intertwined. Cherry wood on the finish. The flavor is impressively nuanced, with deep cherry, woody, caramel, fruit notes. Twinge of orange. Refined yeastiness. Good stuff--falls just short of a world-beater.
