Commercial Description:
Before there was New Belgium Brewing, there was Abbey Ale. It was the first beer of home brewer and New Belgium co-founder, Jeff Lebesch. So the love brews deep for Abbey Grand Cru. To date, Abbey Ale has garnered no less than 16 medals at the Great American Beer Festival–7 of those being Gold. Take that award-winning recipe, precisely increase the hops, malt and fermentation time, and the result is a Grand Cru worth collecting. And that’s exactly what many of us at New Belgium, as well as a growing number of fans, have done. By saving it for a few years, Abbey Grand Cru will continue to improve and age deliciously. Optimal storage is a cool (40-55°), dark place where the bottles can remain undisturbed. But lest we forget, it is a great beer and great beers deserve to be enjoyed. Best served at cellar temperature in a wide-mouthed glass. Toast to the monk’s virtue and have a heavenly experience.

This review is for a 1996 Abbey Grand Cru. This beer was stored in a dark wine room at 75 degrees. This beer had a strong aroma of alcohol when poured in to the glass, however the aroma was deceiving. The Abbey poured a deep mahogany color with notes of raison and plum on the nose. The mouth feel was excellent leaving a lingering taste on the palate. This was a definite treat.

Had this on tap at the Falling Rock in Denver. Wonderful aroma of bananas and chocolate. The appearance is dark brown with a slight reddish tint. Flavor is also complicated: sweet banana fruitiness with a deeper chocolateness. Excellent mouthfeel that masks the alcohol content. Special note that this beer improved quite a bit once it warmed up to proper serving temperature.

Gorgeous, clear amber color, and a fresh aroma of sweet yeast (what a scent! Beautiful!). Subtle, complex, malty, smooth, and sweet (I tasted a bit of candy). Truly exceptional! To be savoured.

Could it be that this is even better than the Double. YES! Much more malty and very yeasty. Sort of like a nice sourdough blended with a country brown bread. One of my favorite American Balgian offerings. Malty, malty, malty!

Medium copper color, large creamy head. Very rich malt taste. Very full rich flavor, expansive and fruity. Mouthfeel is very round, full and smooth. Good hop balance. Re-fermented in the bottle with Belgian yeasts, there is a near vinous like quality to this beer. Reminiscent of a Belgian Red. Very complex flavor, somewhat thick. High Alcohol? Finish is very smooth. Aftertaste is malty and sweet.

I made the mistake of trying this when I toured the New Belgium brewery a while back. I say mistake because now it really bugs me that I can’t get it anywhere else. A lovely amber color and a thick, lasting head. Sweet, fruity aroma. Wonderfully complex flavor with hints of sweet fruit and clove spice. A great mix.

I’m a big fan of the regular Abbey, but was blown away by this. Just the right amount of sweetness, carmel-malty. I need to get my hands on some to hold onto for a while. Addition: 11/28/2004: 2 year old bottle. This stuff only gets better with age. Raisins, figs, spice. It was terrific in mouthfeel, color, and aroma.

This was just an awesome dubbel. I really like the abbey dubbel but the grand cru is just spectacular and I am not sure which one I like better. Just a great aroma, fruity and an appearance that says, I am luscious. A very complex flavor follows the aroma. Very buttery and rich with some mixture of fruits that are dark and light. The mouthfeel is very full, creamy and rich. I would love to have some more of this to let it age for awhile.
