Commercial Description:
Winner of four World Beer Cup medals and eight medals at the Great American Beer Fest, Abbey Belgian Ale is the Mark Spitz of New Belgium’s lineup - but it didn’t start out that way. When Jeff and Kim first sampled the beer at the Lyons Folks Fest, reviews were mixed at best. One of founder Jeff’s first two Belgian style homebrews (along with Fat Tire), Abbey is a Belgian dubbel (or double) brewed with six different malts and an authentic Belgian yeast strain. Abbey is bottle-conditioned, weighs in at 7.0% alcohol by volume, and pairs well with chocolate (or boldly served by itself) for dessert.

This one bothers me because all of the ingredients for a fantastic beer are there but in the end it just comes out missing something. Complex? Yes. Tasty? Yes? Easily drinkable? Absolutely. Just missing something to tie all of this together. I do wish we could get it here in PA because I feel I need to try a few more to pinpoint the issue here.

Clear dark brown amber with a one finger pale yellow head. Modest amount of lacings. Aroma is slightly fermented fruit. Taste is fermented black cherries, a touch of prune, banana, and a hint of chocolate. Reminds me a bit of a Black Forest cake. I can’t separate the hops but the bitterness is there in the finish. The mouthfeel is quite nice with the carbonation flowing over the tongue. Alcohol is apparent but well masked in the taste. Overall a pleasant and very drinkable Dubbel from NB. Drink by date was Aug. 2009.

Nice darker than expected red-brown pour with a solid tan head. Nice roasty yeast smell with a hint of some spice and some dried fruit. Nice spicy dark fruit flavor with a hint of bubblegum and some yeast. Very tasty offering from a brewery I usually find it easy to discount.

Pours a reddish brown with an average off white head. Aromas of dark fruit, caramel, and belgian yeast. Flavor is malty, yeasty, with hints of vanilla.

Bottle: Poured a reddish brown with no much head. The aroma of dark fruit and sweet malts. The flavor was very smooth, not as heavy as traditional a abbey. Overall, very tasty.
