Commercial Description:
Winner of four World Beer Cup medals and eight medals at the Great American Beer Fest, Abbey Belgian Ale is the Mark Spitz of New Belgium’s lineup - but it didn’t start out that way. When Jeff and Kim first sampled the beer at the Lyons Folks Fest, reviews were mixed at best. One of founder Jeff’s first two Belgian style homebrews (along with Fat Tire), Abbey is a Belgian dubbel (or double) brewed with six different malts and an authentic Belgian yeast strain. Abbey is bottle-conditioned, weighs in at 7.0% alcohol by volume, and pairs well with chocolate (or boldly served by itself) for dessert.

From a 12-oz. bottle--Poured a dark clear chestnut body with a small rocky whitish head. Nose of spicy fruits and yeastiness. Great rich mouth feel. Mildly caramelly with good carbonation. Finished with a flavor of cherries and funky (in a good way) yeast. Nice bite and clean, crisp finish.

Bottle. Pours reddish brown with almost no head and very slight lacing. Smell is sweet, of caramel and bubble gum. The flavor is caramel, and the yeast is definitely noticeable. Not overpowering, but not incredibly complex either. Aftertaste is sweet and entirely pleasant. Mouthfeel is good, but with more fizz than the head would suggest. Overall, a very good beer.

Pours a dark brown/red with little head. Bubble-gum and dried fruit aroma that tends to be a bit chemical-ish. Flavor is sweet, banana/strawberry with some raisin. Mouth is fizzy at colder temperatures, but more creamy as it warms. Overall, not bad, but not my favoite Dubbel .

Dark chestnut color; big creamy head. Delicate aroma of caramel and roasted malt, perfumy, elegant. Medium body strength; the flavor is too much monodimensional for my liking: caramel only. Professionally brewed, with a good choice of yeast.

Sampled on draught at the Papago Brewing Company tavern in Phoenix, AZ. Pours a dark brown amber brew with a thin off-white head that quickly dissipates to a fine film and white ring. Aroma of light wheat malt, banana esters, bubble gum, a touch of licorice, and some dried raisin. Taste is medium bodied, light carbonated with a flavors of multi-grain malt, some raisins, prunes, a touch of banana and some yeast. Finish is smooth, creamy with a slight bubble gum and banana aftertaste. Very interesting.

On tap at the brewery. Poured a deep brown color with a light beige head. Aroma of some fruits, mostly banana, and bubble gum. Malty entry with some caramel leads into a yeasty middle with hints of fruity esters such as banana and a soft bubble gum finish. Unfortunately, this is a below-average beer now, but it used to be much better, and devoid of the over-whelming bubble gum notes.

This was my first foray into Belgian-style ales. At first I tasted a coffee background and it wasn’t too bad. Then as I drank on the maltiness and "cheeky" ale flavor started to annoy me. Before long I said, "No thanks" and returned to my lagers. You Ale People can have your ales. I’m going to continue to sample them, but I am a pale lager person except for German Hefeweizens. The NBS crowd that likes to over-analyze and over-describe beer with countless inane comparisons to fruit can have it.

Clear amber body, medium sized beige head; Very pleasant fresh nose, soft licorice spicy, very nice but a little to small; Very pleasant fresh bitter sweet balanced body, big soft carbonation, very good, very drinkable, but to small; To short finish all the right feels and all the right aromas, just not enough of it. Very nice, very drinkable and actually very good, but for a BE abbey dubble it is way to small.
