Commercial Description:
Winner of four World Beer Cup medals and eight medals at the Great American Beer Fest, Abbey Belgian Ale is the Mark Spitz of New Belgium’s lineup - but it didn’t start out that way. When Jeff and Kim first sampled the beer at the Lyons Folks Fest, reviews were mixed at best. One of founder Jeff’s first two Belgian style homebrews (along with Fat Tire), Abbey is a Belgian dubbel (or double) brewed with six different malts and an authentic Belgian yeast strain. Abbey is bottle-conditioned, weighs in at 7.0% alcohol by volume, and pairs well with chocolate (or boldly served by itself) for dessert.

Pours a red/brown color w/ a fizzy caramel colored head. Aroma of dark fruit and sweet malt. Flavor is fruity with some spice and malt. A little bit of strange cardboard/bread flavor. Pretty good for the price, but not very good compared to other dubbels.

Red brown body with an off white head. Dark fruits, malty. Not as rich and full as a true Belgian Dubbel. Considering the cost of this compared to authentic Belgian Dubbels, it’s a very good value.

Pours a reddish mahogony color with a small acidic bubbly off white head. Tastes like carmel and floral. Decent beer but short finish and not as good as it warms.

Found this to be an unimpressive imitation of a dubbel. Surprised to find it so highly ranked. A litte sour and one dimensional.

Taproom. Pours clear brown with average head which barely clings to glass. Nose of allspice, banana, orange. Soft, smooth with tastes of roasted caramel and a little banana. A little clove on the end

Dark brown with medium head. Aroma of sweet dark fruit. Very drinkable and refreshing. Light dark fruit with some spices throughout. Good, but doesn’t have the fullness of a great belgian. This could easily work its way into my normal rotation of beers....affordable and good.

355 ml bottle. Pours a nice mahogany with a dense tan head. Hints of fruit and spice in the nose. Medium to full body. Notes of plum and toffee give way to a dry, slightly tart finish.
