Commercial Description:
Winner of four World Beer Cup medals and eight medals at the Great American Beer Fest, Abbey Belgian Ale is the Mark Spitz of New Belgium’s lineup - but it didn’t start out that way. When Jeff and Kim first sampled the beer at the Lyons Folks Fest, reviews were mixed at best. One of founder Jeff’s first two Belgian style homebrews (along with Fat Tire), Abbey is a Belgian dubbel (or double) brewed with six different malts and an authentic Belgian yeast strain. Abbey is bottle-conditioned, weighs in at 7.0% alcohol by volume, and pairs well with chocolate (or boldly served by itself) for dessert.

12oz bottle. Pours a medium tea-brown color; off-white head with ok retention and solid, fine-bubbled lacing. Aroma shows a strong clove note first and foremost, with a chewy banana / Belgian ester core below; a well-balanced, generous approach. Nice, approachable levels of carbonation on this one. Medium mouthfeel: cloves and sweet Belgian esters again serve as the central point here: crackers, brown sugar, and a permeating banana character; a really nicely balanced, solid dubbel, if a touch straightforward: there’s nothing denser underneath (or maybe there is, with a bit of vanilla and maple syrup; quite soft), but I could drinks loads of this. Nicely drinkable rendition. Lasting finish of breadiness, clove, and lightly toasted malts; well-balanced end.

This beer had a great flavor and nice, malty aroma. Interesting aftertaste.

Another beer i’ve been dying to try for a while that i had at the beer tasting today. Glad i went home with a few! Pours a deep chestnut brown. Roasted and toasty on the nose, decent aromas like french vanilla or something odd coffee aroma. Taste is flavourful with generous amounts of malts but perfectly well balanced in the finish.

Bottle - Pours a clear, rosy amber with very little head. Smells of light spice and wheat. Taste is a little oaky, spicy, and yeasty, with some banana notes. It’s a bit thin and watery, and really not too interesting. It’s smooth, but pretty boring.

Sample from September 11, 2009 Beer Club Meeting. Nice head! Dark amber, syrupy color. Aroma perfumy. Smells Belgian. Hey, whuddya know? Flavor a little tart. Way sweet... too sweet... even for an Abbey... hmm...

Pours a clear cola brown, with a large off-white head. Aroma is of banana and ever so slightly of clove/spice. Aroma could be bolder. Light malts appear in the flavor as do honey and background floral flavors. Watery mouthfeel, thin viscosity. Overall, fair plus.

Bottle. Pours an amber brune with a tan head. Malty with hints of nuts, chocolate, and dark dried fruit. Sweet with caramel and a light spiced note. Good monk.
