Commercial Description:
Winner of four World Beer Cup medals and eight medals at the Great American Beer Fest, Abbey Belgian Ale is the Mark Spitz of New Belgium’s lineup - but it didn’t start out that way. When Jeff and Kim first sampled the beer at the Lyons Folks Fest, reviews were mixed at best. One of founder Jeff’s first two Belgian style homebrews (along with Fat Tire), Abbey is a Belgian dubbel (or double) brewed with six different malts and an authentic Belgian yeast strain. Abbey is bottle-conditioned, weighs in at 7.0% alcohol by volume, and pairs well with chocolate (or boldly served by itself) for dessert.

Bottle. Pours a clear light brown, with an off-white persistent head. Same as the Fat Tire I just had, some yeast poured into the glass resulting in some haziness (even with a careful pour). Aroma is dominated by splicy phenols, with some dark fruits and candied sugar, but very clean. Medium body with some prickling sensations from the carbonation. Flavor is fairly one-dimensional....spicey phenols are there, with a touch of fruit, but finishes very clean. Somewhat flat or stale in the finish. Some warming. Overall, pretty clean for a dubbel style beer, but very drinkable and enjoyable...definitely beat expectations. But I’d consider it more of a cross-over beer for future belgian beer fans.

(Bottle 35,5 cl) Slightly hazy orangey brown with a beige head. Aroma of yeast, fruit and roasted malt. Medium-bodied with some sweet, roasted malt, dried fruit and yeast. Not overly thrilling. 191206

A deep red beer with an orange head. The aroma is sweet yeasty and malty with slight notes of burnt malt. The flavor is sweet malty with quite a lot of caramel and yeast, combined with lighter spicy notes. The alcohol burns slightly in the throat, and mixes with a dry spicy end.

Not near as heavy and malty as other dubbels I’ve tasted, but this is still an enjoyable beer. So deduct style points, but add drinkability points. Large off-white, frothy head atop a clear, dark mahogany sparkling body. Sweet malts dominate the aroma. Caramel, ripe fruit, orange, coriander and dough come forward in an interesting balance of smells. The flavor evokes banana, overripe plum, clove, sugar. Lively carbonation and a slick mouthfeel. Medium body. Moderately bitter in the finish with a light acidity. Warming alcohol.

Bottle. Dark amber colour with a nice white head. Mild yeasty aroma with notes of spices and little maltness. Flavour of wheat, malt, little caramel, yeast and some dried fuit. Ends up little sweet sweet but nice.

Aroma of yeast and malt. A bit of spice. Smells a bit like an American brown ale. Reddish amber color with a huge light tan head. Starts spicy. Followed by malty sweetness with a bit of tartness. Mouthfeel is nearly medium. Very nice ale.

A decent shot at at abbey. Yeast, spice and malt on the nose. Swett stuff, some malt caramel and brown sugar in the flavour. Some ester notes throughout also. Nutty maybe. Warming finish which i like. I prefer their triple.

Poured brown with medium tan head and moderate lacing. Nose of yeast, malt, and spices. Palate a bit fizzy. Flavor fruity. Good finish. Nice for winter.
