Commercial Description:
Winner of four World Beer Cup medals and eight medals at the Great American Beer Fest, Abbey Belgian Ale is the Mark Spitz of New Belgium’s lineup - but it didn’t start out that way. When Jeff and Kim first sampled the beer at the Lyons Folks Fest, reviews were mixed at best. One of founder Jeff’s first two Belgian style homebrews (along with Fat Tire), Abbey is a Belgian dubbel (or double) brewed with six different malts and an authentic Belgian yeast strain. Abbey is bottle-conditioned, weighs in at 7.0% alcohol by volume, and pairs well with chocolate (or boldly served by itself) for dessert.

Draught at brewer. Poured a deep amber with an off-white head. Nice lacing. Dominant nose of tobacco. Truly smells like the walk-in humidor at your local cigar shop. Maybe some notes of leather there too. Flavor of tobacco and toasted pumpkin seeds. Wish I had taken more notes on this one as it is quite an intriguing ale. Bought two cases, so perhaps I’ll adjust these comments after I crack a few more.

A nice chestnut brown. Flavor has some banana, plum, and lots of malt. Very fruity nose. Medium bodied with good carbonation. A great drink.

12 oz bottle, via BA swid. Pours a clear chestnut brown with a two finger off-white head that settled to a thin film. Nice fruity ester filled aroma with banana bread, light toffee, some nuttiness, and a very light yeastiness. Flavor is fruity with lots of bananas and various dark fruits. Moderate alcohol and toffee on the finish. Medium bodied with spritzy efforvescent carbonation. Finish is slightly sticky. Not bad overall, but it could use a little thicker body and a little more yeast character.

Ruby brown with a thin tan head. Aroma of candied sugar, grapes and some bready malts. Tastes quite sweet and malty with some nutty overtones. Noticeable yeast throughout.

12oz. bottle best before 4/7/06. Clear mahogany color with a small beige head. Yeasty aroma with cloves, dried fruits and sweet malt. Flavor was pretty much the same as the aroma except for the the lack of sweetness. The beer was actually quite dry and refreshing.

Rich aroma of bananas, raisens and vanilla. Roasty cloves, spice and some apple flavors. Earthy.. my only complaint is that the body seems a little thin.

I have been rather fond of the brews I have encountered from this brewer. Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a medium ruby-brown color with a large tan head. The aroma is sweet and yeasty with ripe fruits and molasses. The flavor is roasty with strong ripe fruits and a bit of chocolate. There is a mild yeasty note and some light sour tanginess in the finish. A nice dubbel.

(03.26.06) 12 oz brown bottle purchased from Liquidsolutions.biz. 7.0% ABV. Label states best before July 7, 2006. Poured clear dark amber with medium long-lasting off-white head. Good lacing. Soft carbonation. Spicy clove and toffee in the nose. Medium-to-full bodied ale that starts with fruity/smokey spicy clove/toffee flavors. Finishes with light malt fade. Smooth and rich tasting, this is an excellent Belgium abbey ale.
