Commercial Description:
Winner of four World Beer Cup medals and eight medals at the Great American Beer Fest, Abbey Belgian Ale is the Mark Spitz of New Belgium’s lineup - but it didn’t start out that way. When Jeff and Kim first sampled the beer at the Lyons Folks Fest, reviews were mixed at best. One of founder Jeff’s first two Belgian style homebrews (along with Fat Tire), Abbey is a Belgian dubbel (or double) brewed with six different malts and an authentic Belgian yeast strain. Abbey is bottle-conditioned, weighs in at 7.0% alcohol by volume, and pairs well with chocolate (or boldly served by itself) for dessert.

Transparent ruby with a bubbly white head, gone quickly. Nose is incredibly sweet, lots of bubblegum and caramel, some fruit and nut to dry out the sweetness a bit. Flavor is similarly sweet, the bubblegum as gummy as I’ve had, but the malt helps balance the flavor, upping it from the flavor. Rather juicy, some banana and clove in the finish. The flavor is rather refined, but I’m not as large of the gum as some.

A clear mahogany pour with a nice thick one finger sized tan head. Sticky lacing. Aroma is pleasant with yeast, malt, banana, and clove. Flavor is less appealing and is just a bit muddled. It is quite sweet with yeast, clove, sugar, alcohol, and malt. It is easy to drink and certainly not bad at all, but flavors just don’t quite achieve what the aroma hints at.

One of the more solid brews from New Belgium. Bottle pours a bright golden-orange color with a thin, off-white, fizzy head. The aroma is pretty lively with intertwining notes of bananas, carmel apples, pears and hay. The taste is typical of a belgian double with some brown sugar on the front palate, leading into a touch of alcohol, and following up with a spicy finish. Overall a pretty easy drinking brew, with a nice dry finish.

Bottle. Moderate aromas all around, roasted and caramel for the malt, flowers and herbs fro the hops, barnyard for the yeast, with sherry, banana, spices and dried fruits. Head is small, fizzy, off-white, with fair lacing and is mostly diminishing. Flavor starts and finishes lightly sweet and acidic. Palate is light to medium, watery and has a fizzy carbonation. A nice Abbey Dubbel with perfect balance. This beer surpasses the other beers NB brews that I’ve tried.

Pours clear burnt-umber, with a medium beige head, good lacing. Smells fantastic! Plum, apple, caramel, banana and citrus scents. Medium, velvety body, slightly dry. Tastes of caramel, tart apple, and more citrus.

Bottle from Cody, thanks! Dark brown color. Slightly roasted aroma with dark chocolate and pear. Roasty flavor with dark chocolate, raisin and hints of cinnamon. Sweetish but pleasant abbey ale, without being world shocking.

Bottle courtesy of unclemike.Aroma of yeast and sweet malts. Amber body with good head and gusher after takeing off cap. Had a 27APR09 date on bottle. Sweet hard candy flavor along with some yeasty bread notes. Filling beer and sweetness lingers on palate.

Clear amber brown pour with thin tan head and some lacing. Nose of light banana and hints of alcohol. Flavor has a little nutty breadiness to it. Sweet and malty. Medium creamy body with moderate carbonation. Good example of a dubbel.
