Commercial Description:
Biere De Mars is New Belgium’s exploration of the classic French and Belgian brews celebrating the half-winter, half-spring month of March. Our bottle-conditioned version, however, goes where no BIERE DE MARS has gone before. After gazing at its cloudy, yet glowing orange hue, prepare yourself for a celestial collaboration of oats, wheat, barley malt and lemon verbena, all of which is set into orbit by unidentified flying yeast strains.

Medium, hazy orange, decent but quickly fading head. Hard to get an aroma off of this, very faintly of wheat and oranges. Flavors were muted and subtle, not like the Belgian Saisons that are so much more in your face. The "unidentified flying yeast strains" lent an odd, sour off note at the end, almost reminiscent of a spoiled batch of homebrew. Too bad, as I had really been looking forward to trying this. Thanks to TannerTavernBoys for giving me the chance to sample!

22 ounce Lips of Faith bottle purchased from the Pole Line Nugget in Davis, CA. Aroma has some musty barnyard yeast notes at first, which is followed by some light sweet aromas. Some spices present as well. Very slightly hazy dark golden/orange body with a medium whitish head. Sweet, doughy start, which becomes well...pretty bland. Light spiciness to finish. Not much bitterness. A little yeas character, but all in all this is a real snoozer. Doesn’t taste like a BdG to me. It has a very thick oily body, too.

03.23.05 12oz bottle. Orange and cloudy, looks more than a bit like that iced tea-lemonade combo stuff. Dry and funky aromas, wheaty and spicey, plastic, locker room(?) but in a good way. Chewy malts, leaf litter and wet bark, more sweat, old fruit, musty. A bit of a sharp spice to finish, but sweet in the end, too. Soft and full body. Odd, but good.

Warm, honey-colored body with medium carbonation and a tight sudsy white head. Interesting and novel citrus character presumably from both the yeast and lemon verbena. Nice peppery edge. Moderate plastic phenols. Lightly toasted, biscuity malt underbelly with honey tones. Fruity esters suggesting sweet bananas come to the front in the flavor. Considerable malty character for a saison with hints of butter and nuts. Also has a light woody character and a nice subtle touch of barnyard. Long finish with some mild but noticeable hop flavor and bitterness. Seems like it could be drier and fuller. Has a slight syrupy effect on the tongue. Does seem to dry out and improve with some modest cellaring. This is an enjoyable and unique beer overall that’s always worth revisiting from time to time.

Murky orange out of the bottle with a sweet orange nose. Almost no head with the pour and what was there went away quickly. Apple, peach, orange candy, honey and faint spice all in the flavor. I got some dough at the end and orange rind in the finish. Interesting beer. I haven’t had many saisons, but this didn’t taste like them.
