Commercial Description:
Named in honor of our founder Jeff’s bike trip through Belgium, Fat Tire Amber Ale marks a turning point in the young electrical engineer’s home brewing. Belgian beers use a far broader palette of ingredients (fruits, spices, esoteric yeast strains) than German or English styles. Jeff found the Belgian approach freeing. Upon his return, Jeff created Fat Tire and Abbey Belgian Ale, (assuming Abbey would be his big gun). He and his wife, Kim traveled around sampling their homebrews to the public. Fat Tire’s appeal quickly became evident. People liked everything about it. Except the name. Fat Tire won fans is in its sense of balance: toasty, biscuit-like malt flavors coasting in equilibrium with hoppy freshness.

22 oz bottle poured into a pint glass. Pours a pale amber with a medium, lasting white head. Smells of bread and a bit of hops. Tastes of biscuit and cookie as well as toast and coffee with a slight woody taste. I thoroughly enjoyed this top quality beer.

Draft at Bonefish Grill. Pretty amber color and decent head. Very bland aroma and taste, with little hop bite.

Finally getting around to writing some thoughts down. Bomber best before 11SEP09, here on 05JUN09. Light hoppy nose with caramel, biscuit, nuts. Brilliant, clear golden pour with a superb, rocky ivory head. Watery body with a bit of dull caramel and nuts, aftertaste is straight up biscuit. More of those woody hops. Little metallic toward the end. Refreshing and balanced if you can bear the strange, dirty funk of malt profile.

12 oz. bottler. Amber gold pour with a thin, white head. Strange aroma. Malt with almost a cut grass in the sun quality to it. A little bready too. The flavor is a bit unusual as well. A lot of yeast and some hops too. A decent beer but not quite as good as I expected.

Draft at Cy’s Crab House, Chicago. Slightly hazy amber with fine off-white head. Aroma of toasted malt with little hoppiness. Flavor of toasted malt, some caramel, med. hops. Evenly balanced. Most remarkable is its smoothness. Perfectly melded flavors are velvety smooth, no bite or aftertaste. Could easily make this my everyday brew.

an amber ales only saving is its malt character....or, if that is in doubt, just overdose it with hops. this chooses the former, which is rare. aroma of fresh toast at 8am. appearance is copper. flavor is of the same well toasted malt and perfectly balanced by bitterness. none of the horrible malt sweetness usually common to this often maligned style. this is a standard, and it might not be cool to approve of it, but it remains. the same biscuity malt style is found in its twin, mighty arrow. solid brew.

On tap. Poured amber with a white head. Aroma dominated by malts, perhaps some smokey notes. A very malty flavor, its good but not my type.
