Commercial Description:
Named in honor of our founder Jeff’s bike trip through Belgium, Fat Tire Amber Ale marks a turning point in the young electrical engineer’s home brewing. Belgian beers use a far broader palette of ingredients (fruits, spices, esoteric yeast strains) than German or English styles. Jeff found the Belgian approach freeing. Upon his return, Jeff created Fat Tire and Abbey Belgian Ale, (assuming Abbey would be his big gun). He and his wife, Kim traveled around sampling their homebrews to the public. Fat Tire’s appeal quickly became evident. People liked everything about it. Except the name. Fat Tire won fans is in its sense of balance: toasty, biscuit-like malt flavors coasting in equilibrium with hoppy freshness.

Fat fucking tire. Been a long time coming. I can totally see how this is going to be hella popular here in NC. It’s easy drinking, it has a colorful label, and its relatively cheap for a craft beer. Seriously, $3 a bomber is a great deal nowadays. The nose is pretty fucking weak--toasted malts, caramel, blah. Flavor is right on with the nose. Very easy drinking, especially when you’ve already had a few.

Deep amber pour with a moderate, off-white head. Malty with a hoppy finish. Overall smooth drinking brew. Wish I could get it in Florida

Nice amber color with a light brown lively head. Aroma is foresty hops and fruit. The taste is typical amber ale, nice sweet malty, a little spicy and little hops in the end. I don’t really get the hype about this one. It lacks any distinguishing character, which is dissapointing. With that said, however, its not bad and pretty tasty if your in a pinch.

Location: Friend picked one up in NC (22 oz bottle), apparently they just started selling it there, I have had it many times over the years on trips to CO, TX, etc, but this rating is from the recent tasting...3/23/09

Aroma: Spices and dark fruits mostly
Appearance: Orange color, a little red hue to it, decently full white head
Flavor: Malt/hops, Biscuit-like bread, some sweetness
Palate: Semi-Light body, but highly drinkable, solid mouthfeel, well balanced
Overall Impression: Always thought this one was really nice for what it is, an enjoyable beer...

22oz from Total Wine, Durham, ferried home by my lovely wife. Pour is actually pretty rad, with a fairly light orange color and a big lively head. Looks quite nice. More soft hops in the aroma than I remembered as well, and it’s certainly a quite refreshing amber ale. Not too much cloying or overly thick about it. But unfortunately, there’s also not a whole lot of character either. This is a good session brew, the kind of thing you’d be psyched to see at a work picnic or something (only my colleagues have better taste, thankfully).

APPEARANCE: Pours a clear amber color with a small white head that dissipates quickly. There is a little bit of lacing. SMELL: Biscuity malts and caramel. TASTE: Lightly toasted malts with a light caramel sweetness that is balanced light grassy hops. MOUTHFEEL Light to medium body with a relatively dry texture. Light fizzy carbonation. DRINKABILITY: Very drinkable. Enough flavor to make interesting but not heavy at all. However, there is also nothing particularly interesting about the beer. NOTES: BBCSD-0812

pours the typical amber, with mild carbonation forming white head. aroma of whole wheat bread and grains with a touch of butter. Taste is very similar to the aroma, with a bit of burnt and a touch of honey in front of the bitter hops. palate is fizzy, borderline watery. Overall, the aroma does wear on the nose from sip to sip, but i feel i could get used to this as a solid session beer!
