Commercial Description:
Named in honor of our founder Jeff’s bike trip through Belgium, Fat Tire Amber Ale marks a turning point in the young electrical engineer’s home brewing. Belgian beers use a far broader palette of ingredients (fruits, spices, esoteric yeast strains) than German or English styles. Jeff found the Belgian approach freeing. Upon his return, Jeff created Fat Tire and Abbey Belgian Ale, (assuming Abbey would be his big gun). He and his wife, Kim traveled around sampling their homebrews to the public. Fat Tire’s appeal quickly became evident. People liked everything about it. Except the name. Fat Tire won fans is in its sense of balance: toasty, biscuit-like malt flavors coasting in equilibrium with hoppy freshness.

I love to spot a beer I haven’t tried on a menu, and quickly ordered this one on a recent trip to Chicago. Beer poured a slightly cloudy, medium brownish copper color, with not too much head. Decent flavor, if unremarkable. It made for a good meal beer, as it wasn’t so heavy as to dominate the meal nor so weak in flavor as to offer nothing of worth. Not a great beer, but it’d do in a pinch.

Bottle. Nice white head but not lasting long. Amber in colour. Aroma is of biscuits, little bit citrus, sweet and malty. Slightly bitter finish. Good, but not really my choice.

Bottle. Picked this up in a mixed six pack – haven’t had it since circa 1999 or y2k. Pours a clear amber with 3 finger off white head. Nose is roasted nuts, yeast and malt. Taste is sweet malt, dirt and some hop in the finish. Light mouth feel. Meh, I think I still have the free bottle opener when this first came out.

Light Amber Color with a nice head. Aroma has citrus with the subtle hint of floral spice and caramel. The caramel leaves a sweet flavor that works well with the citrus and spices.
