Commercial Description:
Named in honor of our founder Jeff’s bike trip through Belgium, Fat Tire Amber Ale marks a turning point in the young electrical engineer’s home brewing. Belgian beers use a far broader palette of ingredients (fruits, spices, esoteric yeast strains) than German or English styles. Jeff found the Belgian approach freeing. Upon his return, Jeff created Fat Tire and Abbey Belgian Ale, (assuming Abbey would be his big gun). He and his wife, Kim traveled around sampling their homebrews to the public. Fat Tire’s appeal quickly became evident. People liked everything about it. Except the name. Fat Tire won fans is in its sense of balance: toasty, biscuit-like malt flavors coasting in equilibrium with hoppy freshness.

Bottle. Picked this up in a mixed six pack – haven’t had it since circa 1999 or y2k. Pours a clear amber with 3 finger off white head. Nose is roasted nuts, yeast and malt. Taste is sweet malt, dirt and some hop in the finish. Light mouth feel. Meh, I think I still have the free bottle opener when this first came out.

Light Amber Color with a nice head. Aroma has citrus with the subtle hint of floral spice and caramel. The caramel leaves a sweet flavor that works well with the citrus and spices.

22 ounce bottle. Pours a clear copper color with a large, clingy, off-white head that lasts. The aroma is of toasted malts and hops. The taste is of caramel, malts and hops. Leaves me wanting more after each sip. Is a very good beer, as it is easy to drink, tastes great, is moderately priced and is great for various occasions.

Pours a clear amber, with a thin ivory head. Moderate carbonation. Aroma is crisp, with hints of malty caramel. Flavor is well balanced, bread and caramel malts with light hopping. Palate is med-thin, slightly fizzy start, and a lightly dry finish. Overall a well balanced and refreshing beer that would likely get better ratings in in blind test than it does here.

Pours burnt orange with a moderate head. Aroma is a kind of funky dirt, light caramel, toast, only vaguely hinting at Belgian yeast. Flavor of buttered bread rolls, while it finishes slight dirt, hop and grainy yeast flavor. Mouthfeel was light, but not really lacking. This beer always manages to be a little different every time I have it, and it’s always pretty good. It’s a beer that deserves respect for it’s ability to convert people to beer with flavor.

Bomber (Best by 24 Oct 08). Poured a clear copper with a frothy off-white head. Bready aroma with caramel and light spices. Malty flavors with slight citrus hop background. Light to medium body that was sweet up front but had a slight bitter aftertaste. Enjoyable but nothing over the top.
