Commercial Description:
Named in honor of our founder Jeff’s bike trip through Belgium, Fat Tire Amber Ale marks a turning point in the young electrical engineer’s home brewing. Belgian beers use a far broader palette of ingredients (fruits, spices, esoteric yeast strains) than German or English styles. Jeff found the Belgian approach freeing. Upon his return, Jeff created Fat Tire and Abbey Belgian Ale, (assuming Abbey would be his big gun). He and his wife, Kim traveled around sampling their homebrews to the public. Fat Tire’s appeal quickly became evident. People liked everything about it. Except the name. Fat Tire won fans is in its sense of balance: toasty, biscuit-like malt flavors coasting in equilibrium with hoppy freshness.

A reliable, tasty brew that you can get from any grocery store. Well, really, this may be one of the only real brews at most grocery stores. This New Belgium brew is an excellent, casual beer.

Bottle, aroma of white bread with grassy overtones. Crystal clear medium/light amber color. Decent head with pretty good lacing. Medium carbonation. Pretty bland but drinkable.

On tap in CA, can’t say enough good things about it. Great deep amber color. Biscuity & toasty indeed with great caramel notes. Smooth nutty/malty finish. Love it.

Pours, well, amber. Had lots of floaty yeasty chunks. I noticed the label said best before March 2006, so that’s probably why. Aroma is a malty - caramel, biscuits and some yeast. Flavor is malty with just a little hops. Palate is medium with light carbonation. Very drinkable, but not as much flavor as I was expecting.

12 oz. bottle into a shaker at a restaurant in Denver. Nice nut brown pour with some amber red hues (would be a 4 if had any head). Not much on aroma; just some nuts and malt. Flavor is watery and not interesting really. Too carbonated and watery thin on palate. Overall: this brew is way overrated (socially, not on RB) but still poundable.

Clear light amber with white slowly diminishing head. Aroma of bread, biscuits, sweet malt, grassy hops and caramel. Taste of sweet malts, corn with a clean mild hop finish. Watery, thin and bland, not much going on with this one. For all the hype leading into me tasting it, there wasn’t much there.

I’m not sure what all the hating on Fat Tire is all about but, I think it deserves all the praise it has recieved. As a homebrewer, I would love to get that nutty flavor in my beers. Fat Tire also has a great yeasty taste that I like, and it melds well with the nutty flavor to make what I would call "comfort beer".
